Remote Sensing/GIS Analyst

Job Description
Company Background: RedCastle Resources is a progressive, employee-friendly company providing geospatial and information technology support to natural resource management agencies throughout the country and around the world. We specialize in the analysis of remote sensing, ecological, and other geospatial data, focusing on technical expertise and communicating with natural resource managers and other subject matter experts. The majority of our staff provide support through contracts with the USDA Forest Service, assisting National Forests, Regional and Washington Offices, USFS Research, International Programs, and partner federal agencies to use advanced geospatial data and technology for improved mapping, inventorying, and monitoring of natural resources.
Position Description: The Remote Sensing/GIS Analyst will work as part of the RedCastle Resources team in Utah working on Terrestrial Ecological Unit Inventory (TEUI), Soil Survey, ecological site description (ESD) development, land cover mapping, land cover change, using high-to-moderate resolution imagery, lidar, and other data sources for the USDA Forest Service or other related governmental agency. The successful candidate will develop and apply remote sensing and GIS methods to landscape-level ecological mapping tasks by integrating information from imagery terrain, climate, and other geospatial layers along with field sampled data to develop thematic maps. This individual may also occasionally develop and deliver remote sensing and GIS training to adult learners. The applicant should be proficient using multispectral imagery, automated pixel and object-oriented image classification techniques, spatial modeling, statistical analysis, and data mining tools. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on projects ranging from local-level to national-scale projects. Occasional field work or travel is required.
The following characteristics are desirable:
Successful candidates should be self-motivated, demonstrate initiative, be able to work independently, be able to collaborate with resource specialists, and be adaptable to changing client priorities.
Education and Experience:
The successful candidate will have 1-3 years’ experience in remote sensing with good working knowledge of geospatial software as described above. The minimum degree requirement is a BA/BS (preferably a MA/MS/PhD) in a natural resource or technical area such as forestry, biology, soils, geography/GIS, or ecology, with coursework in geospatial technologies.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. - Personal and professional interest in natural resources and the application of geospatial technologies to resource management problems;
- Experience with Soil Survey, Ecological Site Descriptions, Terrestrial Ecological Unit Inventory;
- Experience with mapping software, particularly Google Earth Engine (GEE), eCognition, ERDAS, ArcGIS, and R;
- Experience or coursework in Python, JavaScript, and associated geospatial and data analysis libraries;
- Background in ecology, forestry, geography, or natural resource management area with knowledge of landscape ecology, vegetation, and field data collection methods;
- Good communication skills including technical writing and verbal communication;
- Willingness, aptitude, and skills to successfully teach complex information to adult learners;
