Substation Technician

Location: Ft. Riley, KS

City Light & Power (CLP) is a company at the forefront of the modern-day electric utility industry. We support the Federal Government in the area of military installations and their electrical distribution systems, as well as with local municipalities in the area of street lighting systems. We are seeking a Substation Technician to join our team of Professionals at our Ft. Riley location.

The Substation Technician will perform duties to include maintenance, operation, installation, and testing of electrical and electronic equipment in electrical substations, electrical transmission systems, and electrical distribution systems.

The CLP work schedule consists of 40 hours of work every week. Technicians need to respond to emergency calls as necessary for substation repair.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate (switch) medium voltage switchgear and PLC control
  • Test medium voltage power equipment.
  • Program protective relays manually and via computer.
  • Consult manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams and engineering personnel in order to troubleshoot and solve equipment problems and determine optimum equipment functioning.
  • Prepare and maintain reports detailing all tests, repairs, and maintenance performance.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, replace, and clean equipment and components in the substation.
  • Support Lineman during system restorations, maintenance, new connections, and upgrades.
  • Operate and maintain pump equipment for insulating oil transfer, sampling, and testing.
  • Must be able to work independently as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications, & Experience:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Minimum of 3 years' training in electrical transmission and distribution required.
  • Previous work experience should include three plus (3+) years doing substation maintenance.

Work Authorization/Union Requirements/Security Clearance:

  • You must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Become signatory to local union IBEW 304 and pay IBEW 304's required dues.
  • Able to obtain Military Base Access Security Clearance
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License required.
