Position Summary

The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student's field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

Department/Office Mission:
The mission of Career & Professional Development is to provide resources to undergraduate & graduate students as well as recent graduates as they pursue their next steps. Programs & services are designed to educate & engage students in career planning & decision-making, experiential learning, continuing education, &/or employment search activities. To provide these programs & services, Career & Professional Development establishes mutually beneficial relationships with students, alumni, employers, faculty, staff, & the community.
Job Description-Reporting:
Reports to associate director for career development. The associate director manages the campus wide strategy for student career development & supervises assistant directors & graduate assistants. The associate director reports to the director of CPD.
Job Description-Job Duties &/or Responsibilities:
The Graduate Assistant for Career Development provides 1:1 coaching to undergraduate students across majors & class years to support their career readiness. GA coordinates career development programs/workshops/projects each academic year. GA will conduct classroom presentations on a range of career development topics.
Allocation of Responsibilities:
50% 1:1 direct career coaching
25% program planning & delivery
15% specialized projects
10% administrative work
1:1 Coaching:
Resume/cover letter development, job/internship search strategies, & interview practice to students via video, email & in person.
Program Planning & Delivery:
  • Conduct presentations on core career development topics such as resume development, interviewing strategies, online career branding, etc. to classes, clubs, & student organizations
  • Assist full-time staff with outreach & coordination with student clubs & organizations
  • Assist in the development & implementation of other major events
Specialized Projects:
Other specialized opportunities depending on interest of selected graduate assistant. These projects can be in collaboration with other departments in the Division of Student Affairs, or in the Division of Student Success. This unique feature of the CPD assistantship supports your development for more than one functional area of our profession.

Work Hours, Environment:
Career & Professional Development is open from 8:00am - 5:00pm Monday - Friday. The associate director & graduate assistant will work together to determine a work schedule that fits within this time frame. GA's are required to attend CPD staff meetings, & we will adjust the timing of such meetings if necessary to accommodate class schedules.
Graduate Assistant for Career & Professional Development will have a private office, laptop, dual monitor, & phone.
This office thrives on teamwork. We host many all-hands-on-deck events throughout the year which occasionally require work outside of our business hours. In those cases, work schedules can be adjusted.
Career & Professional Development has a team of 12 professional staff & 3 GA's. Our graduate students are well supported & respected. Current & past GA's report exceptionally high levels of satisfaction in their positions.
Additional Terms of Employment:
First day of appointment, Fall 2024: Monday, August 12, 2024
First day of appointment, Spring 2025: Monday, January 6, 2025

Other Benefits:
The Graduate Assistant will be allocated $300 to support professional development activities such as conference participation. The GA will also be encouraged to participate in other office sponsored professional development such as webinars, networking events, & more.
Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:
  • Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
  • Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
  • Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
  • Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.

  • Must have proven verbal & written communication skills
  • Emotional intelligence: the ability to underst&, use, & manage your own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges, & defuse conflict.
  • Previous coaching/advising experience a plus (not required)
