Position Summary

The Pharmacy Buyer is responsible for pharmacy purchasing, inventory management and ensuring an adequate inventory of medications and other pharmaceutical products are maintained. The buyer monitors and manages drug shortages so that adequate stock is maintained and that suitable alternatives are available. The Buyer ensures that pharmacy complies with purchasing contracts and that equally efficacious medications are purchased at the lowest cost while remaining within monthly budgetary limitations.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Purchasing pharmaceuticals including placing orders, invoicing, inventory control, and general product selection as well as checking incoming credit memos

  • Establishes, implements, maintains, and manages a pharmacy purchasing system, ensuring proper controls, checks and balances, etc., are maintained.

  • Understands 340B implications for ordering if applicable. Purchases pharmaceuticals within operational and compliance requirements of the 340B Drug Pricing Program.

  • Understands GPO purchasing and ensures contract compliance.

  • Assists in identifying cost savings initiatives both in procurement, pricing, and in clinical initiatives.

  • Has control over the inventory to ensure proper storage and rotation of all medications, removal of expired drugs, and returns any overstock of medications. Helps set and maintain stock levels within the department's inventory control program

  • Assists in achieving established inventory turns per hospital goals.

  • Maintains a working knowledge of the pharmacy budget and is actively and continuously engaged in assisting in meeting or exceeding budget targets. Constantly works with the Director and Manager to ensure budget targets are met

Minimum Education and Training

  • Registration with Kentucky Board of Pharmacy (KY hospitals), within 30 days of hire date if you are a new registrant. If previously registered you must have registration upon hire.

  • Nationally certified as a pharmacy technician.

  • For 340B hospitals, completion of 340B University or Apexus Certification within 6 months of hire
