Leidos has an excellent opportunity for an Animal Care Technician to support Johnson Space Center's Animal Care Facility as veterinary technician in an animal research laboratory. We are seeking a motivated and responsible candidate who is compassionate with animals and looking to dedicate their efforts to supporting important research and training conducted at this NASA center in Houston, Texas. This position is responsible for providing care to animals and supporting the animal care facility, which primarily houses rodents used for spaceflight training and a variety of NASA research projects.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with IACUC, including scheduling meetings and maintaining minutes.
  • Ensure compliance with deadlines of protocol approvals and annual facility reviews; maintain training records.
  • Coordinate facility usage and logistics with external vendors, collaborators, and users.
  • Prepare documentation for and facilitate American Association for the Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) and Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) accreditation.
  • Adhere to Safety, Health and Environmental plan as well as all safety laws and internal safety policies / procedures.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to safety and report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.
  • Comply with the Quality Assurance Plan, policies, and procedures to ensure established standards are met.
  • Perform in compliance with all Standard Operating Procedures and animal care and use protocols pertaining to laboratory animal research in the facility.
  • Responsible for the upkeep, cleaning, and sanitizing of housing, procedure areas, animal holding rooms. Identify and report abnormalities to the appropriate personnel.
  • Complete purchasing of animal feed, bedding, and appropriate cleaning supplies.
  • Must have the ability to work independently and within a dynamic team environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Licensed Veterinarian Technician (LVT) with valid Texas License or Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Certification or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) Certification with 4 or more years experience with husbandry and care of animals.
  • - Or-
  • Associate's degree in Biological Sciences or related field with 6 or more years of experience with husbandry and care of animals.
  • Must be able to respond to weekend and off-nominal after hour responsibilities as needed.
  • Candidate must have US Citizenship or US Permanent Residency and the ability to successfully obtain a Public Trust Clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct animal handling experience in an American Association for the Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) accredited animal facility preferred; if no handling experience, biomedical research laboratory experience is preferred as an alternative. Experience coordinating laboratory logistics, such as maintaining records, scheduling inspections, etc. is preferred.

Pay Range:Pay Range $68,900.00 - $124,550.00

Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
