Overview
St. John Fisher University is an independent, liberal arts institution that provides a transformative education to approximately 3,800 undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students each year. Job Responsibilities
The Network Administrator plays a key role in providing IP based services to a large campus community who have come to expect reliable service and exceptional support. We are seeking a self motivated and fast learning candidate with exceptional interpersonal skills. Responsibilities include installation, administration and maintenance of primarily Cisco routers, switches, firewalls, wireless access points, IP phones, analog gateways, voice gateways, load balancers, wired infrastructure, monitoring and NMS systems. Maintain and troubleshooting of physical layer copper and fiber issues, cabling capacities as well as MDF and IDF organization and hygiene. Perform regular network monitoring and analysis to identify and resolve issues proactively and systematically.

Job Responsibilities:

Implementation and Provisioning

  • Work with Sr. Network Administrators and Network Architect to install network systems including routers, switches, VoIP etc. in accordance with industry best practices and project/operational requirements.
  • Analyze technical documents, data sheets, product security advisories and release notes to indicate and prepare for system upgrades.
  • Utilize and propose updates to configuration templates and standard practices.
  • Continual research and self-paced training is encouraged to recommend iterative and innovative changes to the network infrastructure, and where possible automated approaches for network administration tasks, and quantify if proposed changes are scalable and manageable.
  • Participate in and at times lead projects.
Operations and Support

  • Constantly optimizing and validating network monitoring tools to verify the integrity and availability of all hardware, network resources, capacities, reviewing system logs, and performance of all network resources.
  • Maintain IDF infrastructure cleanliness and organization. Monitor event logs and SNMP to replace UPS units and batteries as needed.
  • Provide support in partnership with the other Office of Information Technology and Facilities departments as well as faculty to investigate network related issues that arise.
  • Assist 3rd party vendors performing services for the university such as physical security camera administration, HVAC maintenance, generator maintenance, NFL staff and merchants during Bills camp, etc.
  • Perform predictive and post-install wireless site surveys.
  • Maintain accuracy of static and live documentation.

Education / Experience
Associate's degree and at least 5 years full time direct experience in a similar environment or the equivalent combination of education, certification and experience. Bachelor's degree preferred.
Experience working in higher education desirable but not required. CCNA or greater certification preferred.
Competencies / Skills
Must possess firm understanding OSI layers 1, 2 and 3. Experience with installing, upgrading and configuring perimeter firewalls, routers, switches and enterprise wireless networks. Firm understanding of protocols including SNMP, NTP, DNS, SMTP, RTSP, UDP, TCP, LACP, HSRP, MDNS, IPv6, SLAAC, SIP, and STP. Ideal candidate has worked with technologies such as SEIM tools, PRTG/MRTG, network performance monitoring and can demonstrate network problem solving skills and methods. Able to perform IP 4 and 6 subnetting and utilize a packet capture to reveal root cause analysis. Attention to detail. Good time management skills. Ability to communicate effectively with a collaborative team-oriented mindset.
