About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is expanding their team and looking for dynamic individuals who are following their passion in delivering the highest-quality project work. We are hoping to fill the position of Archaeological/Cultural Resources Crew Lead (HR Title: Assistant Staff Archaeologist). A key element of your job will be to independently supervise and lead archaeological survey crews in the field. Your role will be to serve as crew chief on state and federal lands.

Our Albuquerque, New Mexico office offers a unique work environment and specializes in Cultural and Natural Resources.

What you will accomplish

  • Supervise and lead a small crew while conducting archaeological field work such archaeological monitoring, survey, testing, and data recovery. This includes:
    • independently assigning and directing the activities of others on behalf of SWCA, often in remote areas without immediate guidance from senior managers, to ensure quality and on-time delivery;
    • ensuring that employees understand their responsibilities and delegated tasks and being held accountable if crew members under your supervision are not performing their activities correctly, productively, and safely;
    • serving as a conduit of communication between employees and senior managers, including communicating issues to relevant senior managers;
    • receiving and resolving complaints from employees in the field; and
    • monitoring team productivity and offering timely performance guidance, including determining when corrective action is needed and delivering appropriate feedback.
  • Communicate with Field Directors, Project Managers, and GIS staff through regular, scheduled field status reports.
  • Participate in technical research and writing and perform data QA/QC for reporting efforts.
  • Assist with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of GPS data using handheld units.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or a closely related field required
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience with a wide range of field methodologies, including archaeological survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring required; experience in Southwest preferred
  • Previous field supervisory experience required
  • Accredited field school experience is required
  • Ability to be listed on federal and state cultural resource permits in New Mexico
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS software programs preferred
  • Current valid driver's license and the ability to safely operate a 4wd vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads required
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and often at high altitudes, and the ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required

An employee in this Albuquerque, NM-based position can expect an hourly pay rate of $21.00-27.00/hour. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.
