Overview
This position is primarily responsible for the analysis of human samples of blood, tissue and body fluids to determine chemical content, cell count, drug levels or blood type; may also search for specific microorganisms like bacteria or parasites; includes but is not limited to the preparation of the samples for examination, using automated equipment and specialized instrumentation, performance of numerous complicated tests simultaneously and accurately interpreting the results to provide information for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.
This position requires the delivery of excellent customer service utilizing Relationship Based Care to advocate for safety, patient preferences, and optimal communication through partnering with patients/ families and colleagues, including all internal and external customers.

Responsibilities

Answer telephone calls and use verbal and written communication to provide medical technology information to patients, clinicians and other clinical staffs by answering questions and requests; act as liaison to clinicians for patient testing needs; use professional telephone etiquette while smiling; take messages accurately, route calls and/or messages to appropriate member of the medical or laboratory staff in a timely manner.

Assure compliance of staff with regulatory (COLA/CLIA) standards; Adhere to established Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) protocols to ensure quality of testing and demonstrate professional competence; participate successfully in an approved proficiency testing program; ensure that patient test results are not released until all related QC issues are resolved; successfully complete all competency testing; prepare reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information; ensure accuracy of reports; continuous review of laboratory policies and procedures related to scope of job functions; provide notification to the department manager of updates, revisions, etc. that are needed.

Assure coordination and compilation of QA activities, assist as needed with the development of QA plans, data collection and review, interpretation, compilation and reporting; adhere to daily QC program, report any trends/shifts; assisting with procedure manual updates; support the activities of the system (i.e., the Laboratory Manager and other Laboratory Services personnel, etc.) in regards to patient care and quality enhancement duties and responsibilities.

Demonstrate ability to operate and properly maintain analyzers and test systems; ensure optimal operation of analyzers, and other laboratory equipment by calibrating, completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer's instructions, recognizing situations that require intervention and troubleshooting malfunctions; make or call for repairs in a manner that is timely and ensures both quality and efficiency; maintain equipment inventories and laboratory supplies by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed supplies and notifying manager of need to place and/or expedite orders for supplies; verify receipt of supplies; evaluate new equipment and techniques; assist with training new employees.

Demonstrate the ability to handle problem situations appropriately (i.e., difficult test issues, challenging personalities, call-offs, etc.); document issues outside of normal routine per protocol in the MCHS Safety Portal; notify the Laboratory Manager promptly of risk, safety and/or infection prevention issues/occurrences such as but not limited to patient exposure, needle sticks, fainting, patient complaints, etc. and report occurrences/ incidents in the MCHS Safety Portal.

Efficiently perform simple and complex analysis in all technical areas of the lab; demonstrate ability to maintain positive specimen identification; utilize microscopic, immunologic, biologic, bacteriologic, hematologic and chemical tests to produce and report accurate results within an acceptable turn-around-time; follow protocols for rechecking critical results and calling abnormal and/or STAT reports; perform appropriate documentation; train new employees.

Employ safe work practices; protect patients and employees by adhering to infection-control and hazardous waste policies and protocols; wear appropriate protective apparel, exercise proper care of equipment, adhere to strict hand sanitizing protocol and to written policies and procedures for all tasks; sanitize hands between patients and after removal of gloves; follow identification procedures; maintain work areas in a neat, orderly and clean manner; disinfect laboratory equipment, bench space as necessary; inventory area and equipment supplies as needed to maintain standard of care.

Process laboratory testing accurately, proficiently and cost effectively using the appropriate equipment and available resources to determine or ensure accuracy of test outcomes; utilize downtime backup (manual) protocols when necessary; release specimen orders in Orchard Harvest from off-sites as necessary; record rejected specimens per protocol; promptly process STAT testing, result notification and documentation per protocol; investigate problems related to specimen receipt, identification and integrity; document issues affecting quality and efficiency; communicate pertinent issues and information to lead tech or lab manager for follow-up.

Work cooperatively with other staff to identify trends; quality issues and to recommend service improvements; Maintain inter- and intradepartmental work flow by fostering a spirit of cooperation; Contribute in a professional manner to meetings in discussions of ongoing trends and issues regarding the administration of laboratory departmental activities; Maintain patient confidence and protect the organization by keeping information confidential.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:
Associates, Laboratory Sciences, Required

EXPERIENCE:
1 year, Preferred
1 year working as a technologist in a hospital or similar physician office laboratory preferred..

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:
REQUIRED
ASCP | ASCP AMER SOCIETY FOR CLINICAL
Certification or eligibility as a laboratory scientist is required; Certification must be completed within one year from date of hire. Failure to obtain certification will result in loss of merit increase upwards to termination.
