Description

Under General Supervision, technologist performs MRI/MRA/MRS/fMRI studies following established procedures and protocols within the MR unit to acquire images for use by physicians in treatment and diagnosis of pathologies in clinical environment. Performs research scans as outlined by study protocol. Works closely with research study group to ensure success as outlined in study design.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES:

1- Assists patients and research participants in understanding MR procedures, taking into consideration physical and emotional needs.

2- Oversees safety of patients, visitors, family and staff in the immediate work area with high magnetic field.

3- Maintains ethical standards, patient confidentiality, and professional conduct.

4- Greets and provides care for patients and research participants with courtesy.

5- Delivers patient care under scope of license and training.

6- Screens patients and research participants for metallic foreign bodies and contraindications for a safe MRI scan using department screening forms, MRI safety manual and other resources available.

7- Ensures adherence to MRI safety practices by all patients, research participants, personnel and visitors entering Technologist staffed MRI areas.

8- Performs Quality Assurance testing on 3T & 4T scanners, for 4T trained staff. Reports problems to Chief Technologist and MR service personnel and/or Facilities personnel, as appropriate.

9- Performs venipuncture for blood draws, inserts IV catheter for use before, during, after or independent of an MRI scan, to be used for infusion or blood draw.

10- Screens patients for history of allergy to Gadolinium-based Contrast Media (GBCM) or contraindications with renal function based in the current guidelines outlined by the American College of Radiology.

11- Administers GBCM in both research and clinical studies.

12- Operates the MR control and satellite consoles for each examination utilizing proper techniques and protocols.

13- Transfers, positions and instructs patients and research participants regarding scan procedures to obtain the diagnostic/research study specified by the physician or department approved research study.

14- Understands and performs all aspects of MR examinations including all clinical studies, as well as investigational functional studies including, but not limited to:

* Blood Oxygenation Level Dependent (BOLD) fMRI

* Dynamic Susceptibility Contrast (DSC MRI) imaging

* T2 mapping

* Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS)

* Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI)

* Arterial Spin Labeling (ASL)

* Cerebral Blood Volume (CBV)

* Phosphorous MRS on 3T and 4T & 9.4T (4T and 9.4T trained Technologist only)

* Lithium MRS (4T trained Technologist only)

* Fluorine MRS (4T trained Technologist only)

* Assist in developing and testing new protocols at all clinical scanners, where appropriately trained.

15- Performs studies on Siemens 3T Prisma and Prisma Fit scanners. Some Technologists also trained on 4T and 9.4T scanners, both Varian/Agilent Systems products, and can rotate to these scanners.

16- Quality and completion check images as they reconstruct on scan console, making adjustments and/or consulting with research study group or radiologist, as needed.

17- Archives image/scan data from scanner console to designated server(s), or other device for current technology, as appropriate for system, data type and study.

18- Quality checks images for clinical interpretation.

19- Produces copies of scans to CD at patient or referring physician request, as appropriate.

20- Maintains complete information of patient examinations in logbooks, database, PACs system, Radiology Information System (RIS), archival media, other storage devices, as appropriate.

21- Notifies appropriate McLean or contracted vendor personnel of equipment and facility malfunctions to obtain repair/replacement, as needed, i.e. contact Siemens Uptime Center for assistance with the 3T scanner; contact McLean Facilities for HVAC malfunctions; contact HIS for computer or printer issues. Inform imaging community of equipment malfunction and expected next steps.

22- Keeps scan rooms and associated exam rooms well stocked with all supplies to ensure uninterrupted care of the patients and study participants while in the MR areas.

23- As needed, orders supplies available in the McLean Hospital Storeroom.

24- Informs Chief and Lead Technologists when outside order supplies are needed.

25- Schedules MR exams for both clinical and research studies on the 3T and 4T systems after thorough review of safety information for each patient and participant.

26- Properly documents all researched implants and other potential safety issues. Documents communication with the patient/participant and other health care providers. Obtains approval from Clinical Director for scanning when implants are in place for research subjects and patients after researching safety information, as per policies.

27- Scans associated paperwork (Implant Approval Form, contrast order sheet, etc.) to Epic and other current technology.

28- Contacts radiologist when urgent interpretation is requested or when potential findings are observed during a scan in a timely manner.

29- Wipes down patient/research participant scan and exam room areas with McLean approved cleaning agent at the end of each shift, and after exposure to body fluids, known contagions or open wounds.

30- Maintains a neat and clean work environment, including scan control rooms and exam rooms.

31- Maintains continuing education credentials with ARRT. Remains up to date on imaging trends, techniques, procedures and equipment.

32- Remains up to date on department protocol changes and additions.

33- Uses independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative throughout a variety of situations while remaining in scope of role and policies.

34- Performs other job-related duties and special projects as requested by the Lead Technologist, Chief Technologist, Clinical Director and Research Director.

Qualifications

Graduate of ARRT approved Radiology and/or MR training program. ARRT, ARMRIT or CAMRT certification required. Successful completion of MR Registry exam, or MR Registry eligible required.

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: CPR Certified, Competency in venipuncture for blood draw and infusion. Able to communicate effectively in all mediums in English. Able to operate complex electronic equipment and instrumentation. Must be able to assist/transfer patients safely.
