Job Description

Position Overview:

The Promise Program Mentor is a 1-week position from June 21 - 29th. Mentors will need to be actively engaged from 4:30 pm -8:30 am Monday - Friday with different hours on Friday (6/21) and Saturday (6/22) for training and check in and the following Saturday (6/29) for closing ceremonies and check out.

Mentors serve as key members of the Summer Promise Program team and help create a positive, engaging environment for students to learn and experience a college environment. They mentor a small group of students, facilitate transition from one event to another, eat meals with students, and hold regular hall meetings to ensure that they are adjusting to the program.

The position requires open communication, collaboration, positive energy, and willingness to take on tasks to best serve students and the program.

This position reports directly to the Residential Director of the Summer Promise Program.

Mentor Expectations:

  • Live in the residence hall for the duration of the program, starting with Promise Program Mentor training.
  • Remain Substance-free (including alcohol) for the duration of the program.
  • Be present / remain in the residence hall during nighttime/quiet hours.
  • Use discernment and sound judgment when dealing with sensitive issues.
  • Work with the Resident Director and Program Director to handle any disciplinary or other student issues.
  • Uphold professionalism in all interactions and maintain awareness of how their behavior affects students
  • Attend daily staff meetings.
  • Ensure dorms are clean and assist with shutdown/check-out procedures at the end of the program

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Current Davidson student with at least two years of undergraduate coursework completed.
  • At least 19 years old at the start of the program.
  • A desire to invest in and work with rising ninth-grade students.

Mentors receive an hourly rate plus room and board for the duration of the program.
