Background

The Blossey Lab at Cornell University is studying the impact of multiple stressors on amphibian populations and is looking for field assistants to support the lead technician during the Summer of 2024. The individual would primarily work on two salamander studies but also participate in a study on anuran stressors. Salamander sampling will occur in Central New York across Tompkins and Tioga County, while anuran work will take place in Montezuma Wetland Complex, Wayne County, NY.


The position is full time and will begin as soon as the applicant is available, and will end in late summer, exact date TBD based on availability. Salary is $17 to $18 per hour, depending on experience.

Description
  • Conduct capture mark recapture of multiple salamander species using an existing cover board array as part of a two-person team
  • Identify, measure, weigh, and sex a variety of salamander species
  • Mark salamanders with Visual Implant Elastomer (VIE)
  • Collect environmental data including temperature, humidity, and vegetation metrics
  • Enter and conduct quality control on collected data Other secondary responsibilities may include:
  • Conduct husbandry for anuran eggs, larvae, and metamorphs
  • Construct, repair, and deploy study materials, including frog enclosures, drift fences, deer exclusion fences
  • Count and weigh anurans in outdoor enclosures in a restored wetland
  • Assist with additional Blossey Lab projects, including studies of non-native plants.

Required Qualifications
  • Fieldwork experience or relevant undergraduate degree
  • Ability or willingness to learn safe handling of salamanders and frogs
  • Close attention to detail and ability to keep large amounts of data organized
  • Ability to maintain open and positive communication with team members
  • Willingness and ability to work long hours outdoors (including weekends if necessary), spending long hours sitting or kneeling in cool, damp forests with biting insects and ticks, or in open wetlands without shade in the summer

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with herpetofauna field sampling
  • Experience sexing amphibians
