Job Description:

Responsibilities

The Research Scientist I will work within the Bacteriology laboratory at the Wadsworth Center and contribute to community and healthcare associated investigations through the development and utilization of cutting-edge technologies. This work will include contributing to next generation sequencing (NGS) method development to provide new approaches to improve clinical, surveillance and outbreak associated testing. An array of bacteria of public health importance will be studied including those that are antimicrobial resistant, vaccine preventable, sexually transmitted as well as other bacterial pathogens. The ability to utilize new NGS methods to fully characterize bacteria as well as to compare genomes of cases to sources as well as direct specimen approaches without the need for culture provides many new project areas for improving public health testing. This position will be part of a dynamic team serving the Wadsworth Center's mission in the New York State Department of Health's efforts to protect and promote the health of New York's citizens. Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field and two years of research experience; OR a Master's degree in a related field and one year of research experience.

This position will require the incumbent will meet all NY State and Federal requirements for staff who perform clinical testing.

Preferred Qualifications

NYS Clinical Laboratory License; experience in molecular biology or microbiology, as well as performing PCR, real-time PCR and DNA sequencing on clinical specimens. Demonstrated, strong written and verbal communication skills. Experience analyzing data, preparing data summaries, performing literature reviews, and writing scientific papers.

Conditions of Employment

Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting may be available on a limited basis.

Travel, up to 10% of the time, will be required.
