Summary
The Director - Operations reports to the Sr. Director of Operations and is responsible for the oversight of assets and personnel in North Dakota and Wyoming. These assets include gasification plants, gas transmission, crude and natural gas gathering, produced and fresh water gathering and produced water disposal. Assets are regulated and non-regulated gathering of natural gas and crude liquids pipelines in the Eastern Division. The position is located within field operations and will require regional travel within North Dakota and Wyoming. The incumbent oversees the Rough Rider, Colt Crude Rail Terminal, and Powder River systems through subordinate positions. The average size of the staff is 105 to 110 employees comprised of technical and professional staff positions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • The position covers a wide range of projects and requires a high degree of initiative and self-motivation.
  • Analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, communications, and operations management skills required.
  • Ensures all engineering operations initiatives and processes are in conformance with the organization's established policies and objectives.
  • Must possess self-motivation and initiative to recognize, analyze and recommend alternative solutions to problems and issues.
  • Requires good verbal and written interpersonal skills to communicate with all levels of clients, peers, and management, both internal and external.
  • Proficiency in financial analysis including variance reporting, currency risk, and bid evaluation.
  • Demonstrate operational excellence in safety, quality, delivery, cost, and organizational development.
  • Proactively working to reduce EH&S risks and promoting safe behaviors in the workplace while not impacting the environment.
  • Define and implement new directives for growth in production and quality improvements.
  • Keep current on information and technology affecting functional areas to increase innovation and ensure compliance.
  • Build and manage a team of professionals, drive employee engagement, foster a positive culture and execute strategic workforce planning initiatives.
  • Effectively manage assigned region operations consistent with Company and government requirements.
  • Participate with top operations management in the establishment of company operations-related goals, expense budgets, capital budgets, objectives, and plans.
  • Establish and assure the implementation of regional operations and administrative objectives and plans.
  • Develop and manage an effective organization and direct all regional operations, maintenance and technical service activities in a manner that meets system requirements and/or contractual commitments in a safe, efficient manner in compliance with operational and technical standards and governmental codes and regulations.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with other regions and organizations associated with operations as well as key personnel associated with corporate and regulatory agencies.
  • Fosters good customer and community relations in the work area.

Requirements:

Education and/or Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily. The requirements for this position are listed below:

  • 12+ years of industry experience, some of which should involve time spent in natural gas gathering and processing as well as crude oil gathering.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Proven knowledge of safety requirements and procedures relating to all aspects of the operation of natural gas plants.
  • Proven knowledge of the regulations applicable to natural gas processing plants and natural gas pipelines as well as crude oil gathering systems.
  • General knowledge of the environmental regulations related to gas compression and processing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised and independently.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to detect problems and make corrections quickly.
  • Ensure that all maintenance and construction activities are completed in compliance with established company and industry standards and procedures.
Preferred Experience
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising management-level employees with outstanding interpersonal skills.
  • Analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills required.
  • Proven ability to communicate up and down the organization effectively with exceptional verbal and written skills.
  • Must be a quick learner who can pick up the working knowledge of new information to make decisions and recommendations.

Working Conditions

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Usually, normal office working conditions.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time due to prolonged periods of sitting or standing.
  • Travel will be required.
  • Occasional visits to industrial/manufacturing settings which may include hazardous materials and chemicals, as well as extreme temperature conditions and loud machinery, and require appropriate personal protective equipment.
