ACDHS uses an integrated Two-Generation (2Gen) approach to address all of the basic human services needs of the entire family unit. The 2Gen approach begins with a mindset focused on family-centered program design, continues with the alignment of services and resources within the department as well as across multiple organizations, resulting in coordinated services to children and adults together (family) in order to create long term stability and sustainability.

The 2Gen approach builds well-being for families by focusing equally and intentionally on high-quality services in five areas of focus: early childhood education, adult education and employment pathways, economic security, health and well-being and social capital. This approach will help us achieve our core mission of breaking the generational cycle of poverty, preventing neglect and abuse and building strong communities.

The paralegal performs a variety of duties in order to assist the Arapahoe County Attorney's Office located in Aurora, CO, in the efficient and effective execution of the legal process within various facets of the law including, but not limited to, Dependency and Neglect, Delinquency, Collections, Custodian of Records, Adult Protection and Mental Health.

Duties

* Preparation of documents including, but not limited to, memoranda, correspondence, pleadings, motions, orders, affidavits, notices, default judgments, garnishments, discovery requests, records requests and due diligence searches.
* Perform docketing functions including, but not limited to, docket preparation and processing, trial preparation, deadline dates, court appearances, court communications and motion hearing dates.
* Filing of documents with the Court, either by E-filing, in person filing, mailing, e-mailing etc.
* Attendance at court with attorneys, filing of documents at court and obtaining documents from court.
* Arrange for proper service of process including, but not limited to, summons, petitions, subpoenas, complaints, wage garnishments and other legal documents as well as follow up to confirm service and preparation and submission of proof of service on all documents.
* Gathering information, as well as reviewing and analyzing of documentation.
* Conduct interviews with clients and witnesses by telephone or in person.
* Coordinate document production, response to subpoenas and other records request matters.
* Assist in trial preparation and/or attorney trial notebooks.
* Organization of documents and files, including filings in Appeals matters.
* Maintenance of databases and electronic files.
* Conduct legal research as requested by attorney.
* General office duties.
* Duties as otherwise assigned.

Requirements

Skills, Abilities and Competencies:
* Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations and rules of ethics.
* Knowledge of personal computer word and data processing, use of computer calendars, e-mail systems and of general office equipment.
* Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with attorneys, coworkers, other employees, elected officials, professional representatives, clients, the court, other counsel, supervisors and the general public.
* Ability to process factual information effectively and to apply it to the case at hand.
* Ability to work effectively and in a timely manner when faced with a high volume of work, multiple deadlines, frequent interruptions and dealing with difficult individuals.
* Ability to demonstrate effective customer service skills.
* Ability to work both independently and as a team member.

Education and Experience:
*Paralegal degree or certificate from an A.B.A approved school or a bachelor's degree required.
*Three (3) years preferred experience as a paralegal or law clerk in a law office, court environment or governmental law environment. May consider experience as a legal secretary or legal assistant.
*Three (3) years additional experience as a paralegal, law clerk in a law office, court environment or governmental law environment may be substituted for the degree or certificate.
Supplemental Information

Pre-Employment Additional Requirements:
*Must successfully pass pre-employment testing, which includes an acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR) and background check.
*Possession of a valid Class "R" Colorado Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within two weeks of appointment.

Post-Employment Requirements:

*Security clearance required: will require fingerprinting and a Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) background check

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
*Work is generally confined to a standard office environment.
*Position will require time in a vehicle traveling to/from court and meetings.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The following are some of the physical demands commonly associated with this position.

*Spends 80% of the time sitting and 20% of the time either standing or walking.
*Occasionally lifts, carries, pulls or pushes up to 20 lbs.
*Occasionally uses cart, dolly, or other equipment to carry in excess of 25 lbs.
*Occasionally climbs, stoops, kneels, balances, reaches, crawls and crouches while performing office or work duties.
*Verbal and auditory capacity enabling constant interpersonal communication through automated devices, such as telephones, radios, and similar; and in public meetings and personal interactions.
*Constant use of eye, hand and finger coordination enabling the use of automated office machinery or equipment.
*Visual capacity enabling constant use of computer or other work-related equipment.
