General Summary/Overview:
Under the general direction of the Research Center Nurse Director and Project Manager, the Clinical Research Nurse is responsible for coordinating and implementing specific aspects of designated research protocols as part of a research team. The nurse will work on various clinical studies occurring at the MGH Diabetes Research Center. These protocols may include (but are not limited to) patient populations with type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, diabetes prevention, device trials, and cystic fibrosis trials. Research visits may take place in outpatient or inpatient settings.
The Diabetes Research Center is dedicated to advance innovative and rigorous clinical research aimed at improving the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of all forms of diabetes and its complications- ultimately leading to a cure.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of the research nurse will include nursing care of subjects enrolled in selected clinical research studies and planning and implementing research studies according to the study protocol. Additional responsibilities may include obtaining informed consent, regulatory tasks, and study database organization. The research nurse may also be responsible for study coordination and project management.
Specific duties will include:
* Complete departmental and hospital training as required
* Determine if potential participants are eligible for studies per protocol through chart review and medical history
* Enroll and consent participants
* Interface with staff on in-patient units
* Organize and run team meetings both virtually and in person
* Perform nursing care of research volunteers enrolled in assigned studies
* Monitor study participants for safety and protocol adherence.
* Insert and maintain IVs.
* Perform phlebotomy or obtain samples from indwelling lines.
* Perform all study-specific procedures according to protocol and in conjunction with the study team.
* Collect data as required.
* Research and clinical documentation, including data entry
* Educate and assist research volunteers in aspects of the protocol, including but not limited to medication taking and using devices safely
* Respond to telephone calls from research volunteers
* Become proficient in the application and safety of devices used in study procedures, including continuous glucose monitors and insulin pumps as needed
* Become proficient in the research process and regulatory matters related to clinical research
* Work effectively with support staff, including research coordinators, assistants, and administrative assistants
* Work with physicians, nurses, and other center personnel to safely implement the study protocol.
* Attend necessary staff meetings and trainings as required.
* May be asked to participate in travel within the US
* Regulatory documentation and communication as needed.
* Participate in other activities required of employees at the research center
The research nurse is expected to work effectively and responsibly as a team member within the Diabetes Research Center, attend staff meetings, participate in committees, complete all required training, and pursue continuing education and professional development pertinent to the role. The position is funded through research grants.
