JOB TITLE:

Technician, Senior (Hydrology Field Technician)

JOB PURPOSE:

Assist with Hydrology fieldwork and data analysis. Under limited supervision, provide technical advice and service to faculty, staff and students requiring a high degree of advanced skill and expertise in the operation, fabrication, maintenance and repair of complex equipment and systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist field scientists with equipment installation, monitoring, download, and maintenance (weather stations, soil moisture probes, scintillometers, evaporation pans, groundwater wells, gauging stations, ect.).
  • Perform QA/QC, analyze, and maintain field data records and logs.
  • Assist with reporting and presentation of data associated with field collections.
  • Drive a vehicle potentially with a trailer carrying ATVs and/or fencing, on and off road. Run an ATV on agricultural 2-track and irrigated fields.
  • Use general hand tools for installing scientific instrumentation on towers up to 12ft tall including 12v and 24v solar power supplies. Use a sledgehammer, post pounder, post puller, and fencing pliers for installing and maintaining fencing enclosures around field equipment.
  • Run a laptop and desktop computer with equipment specific software (WinSitu, Evation, Hobo, etc.), coding programs (RStudio, Python), Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, Publisher, etc.), and other standard applications (internet browser, mail, etc.)
  • Perform highly-skilled, advanced work in the development, fabrication and assembly of equipment and apparatus.
  • Determine, recommend, and procure equipment, materials and tools required to meet the technical and research needs of a department.
  • Review design specifications and construct prototypes of new or modified pieces of equipment including testing and recommending design changes.
  • Evaluate and perform advanced troubleshooting of computer, mechanical, electrical and electronic equipment to determine the nature of malfunctions and extent of repair or modification required to properly repair equipment.
  • Perform advanced calibration of equipment and instruments and monitor performance to ensure they are in proper working condition.
  • May assist in performing advanced tasks specifically related to electronics, computers, mechanical, and electrical systems and components.
  • Consult with research personnel to determine the nature of technical requirements for advanced research projects; advise regarding appropriate materials or equipment needed to support the research.
  • May perform all other duties of lower positions within the Technician series.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepare technical repair manuals and technical reports on the progress of projects, as directed.
  • Instruct others on troubleshooting, repairing, installation, and operation of equipment.
  • Recommend equipment and supply purchases, as needed.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position is eligible for remote work and/or a flexible work schedule.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Associate's degree in a related field

Experience: 5 years work-related experience in the construction, repair and maintenance of mechanical or electronic equipment

Required licensure, certification, registration or other requirements:

  • Some positions may require a low-voltage, FCC, or other specialized license and/or certification.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Hydrology or relevant field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to carry 50lbs repeatedly and 50+lbs occasionally with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to work outside for long hours at elevation with no shade in temperatures up to 100F.
  • Experience and/or training in weather stations.
  • Experience and/or training in soil moisture measurements.
  • Experience and/or training in groundwater measurements.
  • Experience and/or training in stream gauging.
  • Experience and/or training in data analysis.
  • Experience driving off road.
  • Experience with using an ATV.
