Job Description

Job Summary: The Health Care Attorney will join the legal team providing essential support to MU Health Care, MU School of Medicine, and other clinical operations and health schools within the University of Missouri system. This position will provide legal guidance on routine, moderately complex, and complex matters, aiming to ensure compliance with legal standards and policies. The attorney will work closely with senior and executive leaders for health schools and operations to analyze problems, assess risks, and inform decisions that impact policies, procedures, and practices. Significant experience in business transactions, contracting (managed care, professional and facility service, and expense), and corporate matters is preferred.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal counsel and support on routine, moderately complex, and complex legal matters about health care operations and schools.
  • Assess the application of university policy and legal authorities to diverse client scenarios involving multiple internal stakeholders.
  • Provide tailored legal advice on health contracting and legal issues, considering varied perspectives among stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with the contracting office and business leaders on transactional matters, including contract negotiation and drafting.
  • Provide legal advice on the development of objectives and general policies and procedures within the scope of established operational goals and plans.
  • Monitor work performance and provide feedback to team members as needed.
  • Collaborate within the healthcare legal team to enhance processes and promote compliance with legal standards and policies.
  • Conduct training sessions to equip University faculty and staff with the necessary legal knowledge and skills for their roles.
  • Work closely with senior and executive management and leaders in health schools and clinical health operations.

The Health Care Attorney will play a critical role in supporting university leaders and management and ensuring the legal integrity and compliance of healthcare operations and schools within the University of Missouri system. This position offers an opportunity to make a significant impact on the delivery of quality healthcare services and the advancement of medical education and research.

Monday - Friday 8am-5pm

Minimum Qualifications
  • A Juris Doctor or LLB degree from an ABA accredited law school and at least 8 years of experience with a significant specialized experience in at least one area
  • License to practice law in Missouri or eligible for admission to the Missouri Bar
Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualification:

  • Experience providing legal counsel within a health care or academic institution.
  • Familiarity with relevant healthcare laws, regulations, and industry standards, including privacy laws and laws applicable to health research.
  • Prior experience with business transactions, contract negotiation, drafting, and review for healthcare entities and academic institutions.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including the ability to set priorities and define operating standards.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams and diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle highly complex information with sensitivity and discretion.
  • Strong understanding of the unique legal challenges faced by healthcare organizations.
  • Membership in relevant professional organizations or associations related to health law.
  • Proficiency in standard business and legal office application systems/software, along with comfort in utilizing business and legal applications.
Anticipated Hiring Range

Compensation starts at $165,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
