Job Summary

The Application Administrator works within a team environment to maintain, optimize, and provide technical expertise for enterprise and business level information systems (Software Applications and Hardware Components). The incumbent oversees Enterprise and/or Business Applications acting as a Primary or Backup Administrator for off the shelf or open-source business processing software tools for ITSM (Cherwell, ServiceNow), Finance/Accounting Packages (Ellucian Colleague, TouchNet), Learning Management (Canvas), Facilities, Scheduling, Planning, etc. Some of the other larger software tools this team is responsible for include Cognos, SolarWinds Orion, WebTMA, Confluence, GitLab etc.

Primary responsibilities for this position include software installation, patching, performance tuning, configuration, documentation, and troubleshooting and/or coordinating those with a managed services provided. In addition, the Application Administrator will assist in continuous improvement and innovation to enhance customer experience and the ROI with each application they support.

Technology Solutions provides information technology products and services for the administrative and business functions of Illinois State University. Through our Technology Support Center and our highly trained staff, Technology Solutions looks to improve the campus experience for all students, faculty, staff, and the rest of the campus community.

The Application Services (APPS) team develops, administers, and delivers quality application services to the University. They work on enterprise and business applications, such as PeopleSoft, Canvas, and others.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$60,000 - $80,000 annual

Required Qualifications
  1. High school diploma or equivalent
  2. Any one or any combination totaling two years (24 months) from the following categories:
    a. College coursework which includes Information Technology, IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
    - 30 semester hours equals one year (12 months)
    - 60 semester hours or Associate's degree equals 18 months
    - 90 semester hours equals two years (24 months)
    - 120 semester hours or Bachelor's degree equals three years (36 months)
    b. Work experience in IT-related functions, such as IT support, systems administration, hardware/software support, programming, networking, IT systems integration, or closely related field.
  3. Two or more years of work experience performing server and/or application systems administration including things like installation, configuration, backups, firewall settings, and event monitoring
  4. Experience with ITSM, ticketing, and issue tracking
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Knowledge of and experience with:
    a. source control such as GitLab
    b. different Server Operating Systems such as Windows Server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux
    c. containerization software such as Docker, Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, Amazon Elastic Container Service, etc.
  2. Experience with/on:
    a. applications with more than 1000 users
    b. deploying and maintaining software on physical servers, virtual servers, and in container-based platforms
    c. Virtual Computing using VMware specific technologies
    d. Cloud Computing (Amazon AWS, Azure, etc.)
    e. common higher education administrative systems
  3. General understanding of underlying database technologies and ability to use 1 or more common SQL query/reporting tools such as SQL Developer, TOAD, Cognos, SSRS, Crystal Reports, etc.
  4. Knowledge of:
    a. Web Server Software such as Apache, IIS, Tomcat, WebLogic
    b. IT Infrastructure Hardware such as Servers, Storage, Networking, Backups
  5. Familiarity with Single Sign-On concepts and understanding of Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) technologies
  6. Ability to:
    a. leverage Microsoft Word, Visio, and Excel
    b. work independently and in a team environment with good communication and collaboration skills
    c. create good technical documentation that is useful to other team members and various audiences
    d. adapt quickly to new technologies and changing business requirements
  7. Strong customer service skills along with a desire for achieving excellence in customer satisfaction, process and product quality and reliability
  8. Strong project, analysis, and research skills
  9. Foundation qualification in Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL)
Work Hours

Core Hours: 8:00am-4:30pm Monday through Friday; occasional weekend and evening hours as business needs dictate

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score.
