The Managing Director, Marketing and Communications is a key member of the Development Office management team who brings vision, leadership skills and extensive experience to the role. The Managing Director leads digital and print communications for the department and works closely with colleagues across the hospital and the system to plan and implement all marketing related initiatives across communication channels to increase philanthropic revenue, promote events, improve brand awareness, cultivate and steward donors and create prospect lead generation.

Reporting to a Senior Managing Director, the Managing Director is the primary liaison to and maintains close, cooperative working relationships with other key units of Mass General and Mass General Brigham and is empowered to represent Development at the hospital and across the system, within the context of their functional responsibilities.

The Integrated Marketing and Communications program includes 21 professionals charged with the overall strategy for and management of the Development Office's comprehensive marketing and communications program, comprising both digital and print communications. The team includes writers and editors of both print and digital communications, digital marketers, graphic and web designers, and more.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide strategic leadership for development communications including success indicators/metrics to drive fundraising, donor engagement and stewardship through support of digital, print and events communications.
  • Oversee content strategy, digital marketing and design/creative services teams providing coaching, mentorship, and performance management, and identifying, developing and retaining the next generation of leaders with the department.
  • Direct bespoke development communications supporting individual solicitation, cultivation and stewardship activities. Drive innovation and adoption of new tools to support compelling solicitation strategies for major and principal gift prospects, partnering with Donor Relations colleagues.
  • Work in direct collaboration with the Mass General Brigham (MGB) Marketing team, particularly the Senior Director of Internal Communications for Mass General, the media relations and brand teams to develop and execute cohesive communication strategies across Massachusetts General Hospital.
  • Manage relationship with internal and external public relations counsel to ensure nimble and timely media strategies for priority development media opportunities and to leverage their expertise in support of hospital and community fundraising events.
  • Serve as primary liaison between the Mass General Development Office and MGB Marketing to develop and contribute compelling content to fuel institutional and department marketing plans to maximize our reach across multiple platforms and channels.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to identify and solve problems and challenges with broad impact across the department; provide thought leadership on projects beyond immediate area of responsibility, as appropriate.
  • Create and maintain regular reports on progress and results to share with hospital leadership.
  • In partnership with the Senior Managing Director, determine appropriate staffing needs and define staff roles and responsibilities to provide support and a balanced schedule for each staff member within IMC.
  • Partner with Development Talent Management to recruit, hire and onboard for vacant positions, ensuring diversity, equity and inclusiveness in hiring and recruiting practices.
  • Contribute to maintaining positive office morale, even in the face of high work volume and challenging periods.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a bachelor's degree and 10+ years of progressive experience in development marketing and communications, preferably at an academic medical center and/or hospital, and 5+ years of management experience.

In addition, the successful candidate will bring a track record of creating and implementing sophisticated marketing and communications strategies and the following skills, abilities and competencies:

  • Inclination to build relationships with internal and external constituencies.
  • Excellent discretion, professionalism and judgment, attention to detail, and organizational/project management skills.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.
  • A positive and collaborative approach, ability to set priorities and manage expectations, and the ability to work well under deadlines.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational and managerial capabilities, ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks also required.
  • Vendor management and contract negotiation experience essential.
  • Strong belief in the mission of Massachusetts General Hospital.
  • Strong command of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Proficiency with Blackbaud CRM, preferred.
