Job Description

Major Responsibilities:

  • Competence in carrying out technical, direct patient care skills to assist Emergency Department (ED) and Critical Care (CC) staff RNs and/or physicians.
    • 1)Exercises clinical competence in skills and follows clinical procedures based on hospital policy.
    • 2)Assists in setting up and safely operates various equipment (ie. hypothermia blanket, Bair Hugger, EKG machine, cardiac monitor, pulse oximeter, glucometer, scale, etc.) as requested.
    • 3)Correctly interprets cardiac rhythms/dysrhythmias.
    • 4)Performs quality control checks for point of care tests, performs point of care testing as assigned.
    • 5)Perform basic pulse oximetry and incentive spirometry, discontinuance of standby oxygen.
    • 6)Collects and labels specimens appropriately utilizing techniques as defined by established policy. Documents in ER Information System.
    • 7)Properly applies soft and leather restraints and posey vests.
    • 8)Assists in completing restraint record by documenting toileting, feeding, repositioning of patient per policy
    • 9)Performs CPR according to AHA guidelines
    • 10)Performance of courier duties to and from ancillary department (ie. transporting of equipment, supplies, specimens, charts, belongings, etc.) to or from the appropriate places to facilitate smooth department functioning.
  • Provision of assistance to nurses in the care and discharge of patients as needed.
    • 1)Accompanies non-telemetry and telemetry ED patients deemed "stable" by RN and MD to special procedures and CT scan.
    • 2)Appropriately labels patient belongings
    • 3)Inserts foley catheters.
    • 4)Assists nurses with patient care and discharge (ie. dressings, lifting, changing linens, answering lights, toileting, etc.) Provides AM or PM care, including bed bath, or set-up, oral and denture care, shave, back rub and skin care. Performs post-mordem care.
  • Transportation of patients to and from ancillary departments adn admitted patients to their assigned rooms.
    • 3)Transports non-telemetry patients to ancillary departments and assigned unit beds.
    • 1)Transports telemetry patients deemed "stable" by RN and MD to the assigned unit bed.
    • 2)Assists RNs with transfer of "unstable" telemetry patients to the assigned unit bed or other departments for diagnostic testing
  • Demonstration of complete, accurate, professional communication practices.
    • 1)Communicates accurate, comlete information regarding patient and procedural data tot he RN and/or MD.
    • 4)Promotes patients safety by reporting of issues through established channels and participating as requested in safety initiates.
    • 2)Documents performance of skills and patient data accurately and concisely on the patient record.
    • 3)Communicate regarding broken, missing or damaged ED equipment to the Inventory Clerk for replacement or repair. Labels as malfunctioning and takes malfunctioning protable equipment to the Inventory Clerk. Posts appropriate signage on malfunctioning fixed equipment and reports such to the Inventory Clerk.
  • Provision of needed supplies used throughout various areas of the department/unit. (In the ED shared accountability with the Patient Care Technician and Inventory Clerk)
    • 1)Orders appropriate departmental supplies that are assigned as a responsiblity (ie. linen, stock nourishments).
    • 2)Cleans and refurnishes rooms with lined.
    • 3)In the ED, replaces supplies to Basic Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics in the absence of the Inventory Clerk.
  • Cleanliness of storage areas and preparation of equipment and sterile trays used in the department/unit.
    • 4)Ensures all ED hallways are clear.
    • 1)Cleans reusable equipment.
    • 2)Aides in transport to central sterilizatin as needed.
    • 3)Organizes and cleans storage areas, as needed.
  • Demonstration of ability to anticipate/solve routine daily problems/events.
    • 1)Priorities tasks appropriately.
    • 2)Utilities appropriate resources as necessary.
    • 3)Functions according to established and policies and procedures.
    • 4)Self-initiates work assignment.
  • Demonstration of commitment to teaching/learning.
    • 1)Maintains required professional certifications.
    • 2)Attends 50% of department meetings/in-services
    • 3)Reads and signs off on 100% of all meeting minutes when absent from meeting.
    • 4)Participates in the orientation of other staff memebers by acting in a preceptor role and by sharing experiences and knowledge, which assist others in the ED to learn.
    • 5)Correctly explains procedures to patient and significant others.
  • Demonstration of commitment to the organization by supporting and adapting to changes consistent with operating goals.
    • 1)Adheres to established policies and procedures.
    • 2)Adheres to established safety practices.
    • 3)Supports/participates in unit goal formation.
  • Competence in carrying out technical, direct patient care skills to assist Emergency Department (ED) and Critical Care (CC) staff RNs and/or physicians. (Accountability A continued..)
    • 1)Measures and records all intake and output
    • 2)Answers patient call lights promptly and follows up to ensure needs of the patient and significant others are met.
    • 3)Documents on ED Tracking Log.
    • 4)Weighs and measures height of patients, documents in ED Information System.


Education/Experience Required:

  • Certified as CNA, EMT, paramedic, or ERT with 2-3 yrs. of hospital or pre-hospital patient care experience or acceptance at an accredited medical school or completions of 2-3 years of nursing school clinical rotations or completion of a certified medical assisting program


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Customer Focus Skills * Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • CNA, EMT, ERT, MA certification Current CPR certification


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • * Ability to successfully complete hospital-based training for Patient Care Assistant. * Ability to work rotating shifts any day of the week; Including holidays. * Willing to be called off based on unit demands. * Exposure to various contagious diseases, radiation, chemical, caustic materials, electrical equipment and hazards associated with their use. * Demands which require lifting throughout the day according to DOL Definition.
  • If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
