Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

The Visitor Services department is seeking a full-time Senior Manager of Accessibility. The Senior Manager will serve as the chair and an in-house consultant in Museum Accessibility Committee meetings, in evaluation of Museum accessibility policies, programs, services, and facilities. They are responsible for supervising and leading the day-to-day operation of the Visitor Services team through mentoring, managing, and training. They will provide guidance on accessibility-related decisions for the Museum and identify improvements needed to improve visitor experiences.

Job duties include:
  • Advise visitor-facing Museum staff in assessing and determining reasonable visitor accommodations and ensuring compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and other related laws and regulations.
  • Assess and plan access evaluations throughout the Museum to eliminate any physical, programmatic and policy barriers, as required by law.
  • Interact with and respond to visitor accessibility and accommodation inquiries and special requests while supporting and updating existing Museum program offerings.
  • Provide sensitivity training to staff and conduct workshops on accessibility to staff as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with other Museum departments (i.e., Human Resources, the Office of General Counsel) to promote and ensure the Museum's compliance with city, state and federal laws/regulations. Perform these responsibilities in accordance with the Museum's mission.
  • Record and report on accessibility compliance and other program data on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis.
  • Represent the Museum to the public by managing VS Managers, Supervisors and Representatives.
  • Manage and supervise visitor interactions, including member visits.
  • Assist with school and tour group check-ins and assist with ticketing needs.
  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of the Tessitura ticketing system.

The expected salary range for the Senior Manager of Accessibility is $80,000/annual - $90,000/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Required Qualifications
  • 2 years experience as an ADA Coordinator, Disability Rights Coordinator, ADA Determinations/Compliance Specialist or a similar title.
  • Bachelor's degree in rehabilitation counseling, disability studies, nursing, social sciences, psychology or a related field OR a High School Diploma (or equivalent) and 5 years work experience as described above.
  • Demonstrated expertise and training in ADA guidelines/compliance.

  • Experience working in a visitor-facing role at a cultural institution or similar venue.
