General Notes

Dean of Students staff serve students through programs, events, resources, and services built around student support, student involvement, and student conduct. Our services also include Student Governance Organizations. Dean of Students is one of eight departments in the Division of Student Affairs.

Purpose

Works with the Executive Director of Student Support to provide supportive leadership to the unit, demonstration response, student crisis intervention, and participate in on-call rotation. The position engages in extensive campus outreach, training, and collaboration with faculty, staff and students.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise the coordinator for demonstration and response and provide oversight and management for on-call demonstration response team.

  • Oversee the campus demonstration response including prep meetings, demonstrations, and after-action discussions and serve as the point person for faculty/staff/students.

  • Serve as a back-up to the executive director for the Emergency Operations Center and serve as essential personnel during campus emergencies. Responsible for communicating with leadership when needed.

  • Provide immediate and on-going support to students needing support with absence notifications and student emergency funds.

  • Assists with the development, interpretation, and implementation of policy and procedure related to demonstrations and emergency response.

  • Participate in on-call rotation and serve as an emergency contact for UHD, UTPD, CMHC, and other departments after hours, on weekends and holidays.

  • Meet with students, faculty, legal affairs, campus colleagues, community members and others, as appropriate, for consultation, training/workshops, and problem solving. Serve as a resource on demonstrations at the institution.

  • Assists or leads special assignments within the unit and the Office of the Dean of Students, including committee appointments.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in student affairs administration, social work, psychology, counseling or related field and 7 or more years of experience in higher education administration, residence life or other community agency relating to student development. Direct experience with emergency response and critical incidents. Experience supervising staff. Demonstrated organizational, administrative, listening and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to work under stress, perform multiple tasks, and maintain confidentiality. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build campus partnerships.Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

More than seven years of experience counseling or working with college students, including the following - supervision and leadership experience, direct experience with crisis management and in the development, implementation, mediation, and evaluation of crisis and-or grief intervention protocols, and assessment experience. Experience working with a law enforcement agency. Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment regarding student problems, parental and faculty concerns.

Salary Range

$87,000 non-negotiable

The successful candidate must participate in on-call rotations and serve as an emergency contact for University Housing & Dining, UTPD, CMHC, and other departments after hours, on weekends and during holidays. Flexibility in schedule is important for this position.
