Position Overview

Qualus Solutions of Florida, LLC is a leading field services provider of specialized maintenance and testing of power systems.


Power your future with Qualus Solutions of Florida, LLC in our Field Services department as a Union Senior Relay Field Technician. The Union Senior Relay Field Technician is responsible for the commissioning and testing of protection & control schemes and systems for client electric utility substation and plant locations. "Protection and Control Schemes and Systems" includes, but is not limited to the range of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED). Such schemes and systems are commonly applied to protect, monitor, and control utility distribution, transmission, and power plant assets. The systems and schemes include SCADA systems and the communications media between IEDs, whether considered a "relay", meter, Remote Terminal Unit (RTU), Digital Fault Recorder/Transient Recorder (DFR), or interfacing with an IEC-61850 or other multifunction media converter or intelligent logic device.

Responsibilities
    Interpreting substation drawings (e.g., single line drawings, AC and DC schematics, panel wiring diagrams, and panel layout drawings and performs red-lining of design documents throughout the drawing set.
  • Writing procedures and/or test plans, risk assessments and practical application of basic protection and control systems and schemes in support of maintenance and construction activities.
  • Creates comprehensive functional guidelines and identifies common risks associated with testing and commissioning those schemes and systems.
  • Testing, including (without limitation): reading/verifying all voltage and current inputs to relays; verifying all metering (local and SCADA); calibrating all relays; trip testing (local and SCADA); verifying all alarms (local and SCADA); verifying all alarms (local and SCADA); verifying all function switches, end-to-end testing, IED testing, etc.
  • Performing routine troubleshooting and repair of substation relaying and control equipment. Commission new substations, power equipment, relaying (electro-mechanical, solid state and microprocessor), pilot channel equipment (power line carrier, pilot wire, transfer, transfer trip, fiber optic, CVT's, line tuners, line traps, etc.), controls and communications equipment.
  • Leads people and tasks within a larger project, or provide technical and people leadership on projects with well-defined scopes of work.
  • Performs weekly site safety inspections.
  • Leads the application of HP with the approval of the Project Lead.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting One Line, AC & DC Elementary and Wiring diagrams
  • Proficient in handling simple volt-ohm-meter and working with hand tools
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply test procedure for various types of substation equipment; communicate effectively with diverse groups, tailoring communication for audience and situation.
  • Ability to learn and apply client's switching procedures and safety measures as required.
  • Ability to reference and complete assignments as described in applicable specifications.
  • Ability to perform regular field work both indoors and outdoors.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, communication skills, business acumen, management ability.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook).
  • Reasoning Development: Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form; deal with problems involving several concrete variables.
  • Examines information, facts, and data, and draws logical conclusions from available information. Thinks under pressure and acts prudently concerning the safety of others.
  • 75% travel to various substations throughout the state of Florida.
Qualifications

1. Education: Two year degree or technical school graduate; or relative field experience of minimum 4 years may be considered in lieu of technical school
2. Experience: Minimum of 4 years experience in commissioning, panel and equipment checkout, relay calibration, testing and repairing substation relaying and control schemes;
3. Desired Related Experience: Experience is desirable in any of the following related areas: substation design (including protection & control engineering); substation construction; substation commissioning; SCADA/Fault Data/SER/Integration-Automation equipment installation and testing; 3 phase power systems; power system protection & control schemes; test equipment; test equipment software; Test equipment and toll/wiring usage; interpretation of wiring and elementary diagrams; basic test skills to perform duties listed above; basic PC skills
4. Specialized Knowledge, Certifications and Licenses: Must have valid driver's license and good driving record.

5. Must be willing to travel.
