Job Description
Job Summary:

The Language Program Office is a member of the International Division at UW-Madison and is the home of the American Institute of Pakistan Studies (AIPS), the Wisconsin Summer Language Institutes (WISLI), Project GO at UW-Madison, and the Regional Flagship Languages Initiative (RFLI) for Hindi, Indonesian, Thai, Turkish, and Vietnamese. The LPO strives to engage with, support, and foster further development of Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs) through teaching, learning, and research both at UW and beyond.

The majority of this position will be working with the RFLI and AIPS programs, however the potential exists for working with other LPO programs in a similar capacity as needed. Please see the LPO website for information on other LPO programs:

In its capacity with RFLI, this position will primarily be responsible for assisting with the execution of the RFLI programs, ensuring that RFLI student needs are met throughout all stages of the application process, summer and fall programs, and post-program wrap-up. The RFLI Program Assistant will work alongside internal and external RFLI staff members both domestically and abroad. The RFLI Program Assistant is expected to work closely with the RFLI Coordinator, language pedagogy coordinators for each RFLI program, and other LPO and program staff. Daily tasks and projects may include: scheduling logistics for meetings and events; ordering and maintaining supplies; web and social media updates; responding to email/phone inquiries; creation and distribution of informational or marketing materials; assisting with events thorough the planning, set-up, delivery, and clean-up, etc.

In its capacity with AIPS, this position will primarily be responsible for working with AIPS leadership in the execution of grants and activities related to the AIPS mission. The AIPS Program Assistant would be expected to play a lead role in coordinating, facilitating, tracking, and communicating the activities of one or more projects. These activities include, but are not limited to, pre-departure orientations, virtual workshops, summer institutes in the US, and events in Pakistan.

The expectation is that this position will be split evenly between RFLI and AIPS duties, though fluctuations in activities may dictate the need to dedicate more time to either project, or in support of other LPO programs. Because of the nature of the position, candidates will be expected to have excellent communication skills, ability to take direction well, ability to work independently with a team-oriented mindset, ability to take appropriate initiative, and good judgement.
