Lineman

Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT)

Division of Electrical Operations

Number of Positions: 16

These positions are open to the public and all current city employees covered under the City's Collective Bargaining Agreement with the INTERNATIONAL BROTHERHOOD OF ELECTRICAL WORKERS-LOCAL 9 (BARGAINING UNIT 29).

Only employees currently in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS WILL RESULT IN A REJECTED BID APPLICATION

Under supervision, installs, repairs, and test aerial and underground electrical wires, fixtures, and related equipment and performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Installs and connects electrical lines, fiber optics and cables to power sources.
  • Splices and terminates copper and fiber optic cables.
  • Cuts, bends, and fits conduit into trenches and installs new electrical wire.
  • Relocates existing electrical installations and fixtures to facilitate street construction projects.
  • Performs voltage test to determine type of wire and level of functionality.
  • Locates and repairs breaks in underground electrical lines.
  • Removes decayed or broken cable and installs new conduit pipe and cable.
  • Assembles and installs electrical fixtures (e.g., light poles, lamps, traffic signal heads and surveillance cameras)
  • Tests fire alarm circuits and the timing of traffic signals and streetlamps to ensure proper operation.
  • Prepares work activity reports.
  • Operates an aerial boom from a line truck to reach aerial wires as required.
  • Marks cable locations on streets to prevent damage by other work crews and contractors as required.

Additional duties may be required for this position.

Location: 2451 S. Ashland Ave, Chicago, IL 60608

Days: Monday-Friday

Hours: 7AM-3:30PM

Salary: $60.15/Hourly

Qualifications

* Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered Lineman apprenticeship training program and journeyman status, or an equivalent combination of education training, and experience.

Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications

O A valid State of Illinois driver's license is required.

O Must have the permanent use of an automobile that is properly insured, including a clause specifically insuring the City of Chicago from accident liability.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to successfully pass both a written job knowledge exam and a skills assessment. Test results will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after test results have been analyzed and compiled. Bidders receiving a passing score on the written exam, skills assessment and possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected in seniority order according to the collective bargaining agreement.

Preference will be given to external candidates possessing the following qualifications:

  • Previous work experience with high voltage, i.e., (120volts or 240 volts)
  • Previous work experience making "Live" circuitry repairs while (HOT)
  • Previous work experience with directional drilling and boring
