Pay Range

$113,790 -$141,276 Annually

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.


Job Description

We have an opening for an Engineering Technical Associate for installing, testing, repairing, maintaining, or modifying complex electrical/mechanical systems on a range of laboratory (and related) equipment in support of various programs at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. You will have close interactions with various disciplines and crafts in the Environment, Safety and Health, Engineering, Physical Life Science, and Operations and Business Directorates as well as scientists, engineers, and technical staff throughout the Laboratory. Your duties may include the ongoing support and operation of high performance scientific equipment. You may be required to work in areas with hazardous materials including, but not limited to, beryllium, radioactive, toxic, or high explosives materials. This position is in the Materials Characterization Group within the Materials Science Division (MSD).

You will

  • Apply innovative technical expertise to the design, fabrication, installation, maintenance, and/or modification of electrical/mechanical systems in the MSD and across the LLNL in general to support cutting-edge scientific research.
  • Lay out and install electrical devices, power distribution equipment, and wiring systems in accordance with national, local, and LLNL safety codes and practices.
  • Collaborate with technical and scientific staff, including subject matter experts, to install, maintain, and upgrade experimental setups, and to provide ongoing support for experiments that use these setups.
  • Select appropriate work methods in collaboration with the Mechanical Technician Team Lead and stakeholders from the scientific staff for use in environments that routinely present chemical hazards including beryllium, radioactive material, lead, asbestos, and nanomaterials, as well as explosive hazards, biomaterial hazards, and electrical hazards.
  • Use hand and powered tools commonly implemented for mechanical assembly/disassembly and electrical work, and the repair and operation of advanced scientific instruments, including diagnostic equipment such as multi-test meters, voltmeters, insulation testers, line analyzers, logic analyzers.
  • Perform lock out/tag out to isolate components and de-energize equipment.
  • Use advanced electrical and mechanical skills to solve complex to highly complex technical problems and make decisions of high consequence associated with the installation, decontamination and decommissioning, and/or ongoing maintenance and use of scientific equipment.
  • Understand and calculate fault current and arc flash.
  • Lead small groups of technical employees to complete projects involving multiple electrical, mechanical workers and/or other crafts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electronics, mechanical, industrial, manufacturing, computer engineering or electro-optic technology.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Experience in the function, modification, and operation of a diverse range of laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to evaluate complex electrical (including diagrams, schematics, and panel schedules) and mechanical systems (e.g., high vacuum and pressure systems) and apply best practice scientific and engineering solutions in both facility operations and experimental lab environments.
  • Experience using hand and powered tools that are typically used in the electrical trade including basic diagnostic equipment such as multi-test meters, oscilloscopes, recorders, line analyzers, logic analyzers, as well as diagnostic software on PC and CNC based platforms.
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable electrical codes (e.g., the National Electrical Code NFPA-70, NFPA 70E, NFPA70B and the Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery NFPA-79) OSHA, and ES&H regulations.
  • Advanced level skills knowledge and abilities in equipment repair and related electrical/mechanical systems; including procedures, standards, and techniques for evaluating, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining various laboratory equipment.
  • Experience in the use of technical and scientific knowledge to provide and implement novel mechanical/electrical solutions to enable one-of-a-kind experiments.
  • Experience using respiratory protection.
  • Ability to operate common motor vehicles, and the potential to operate powered industrial trucks.
  • Verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical information and provide technical direction with the ability to mentor others with advanced technical skills and working effectively in a dynamic and multidisciplinary environment, including scientists, engineers, technicians, and designers.
