This role is a part of the Test & Flight Operations team, providing centralized support to business units with a focus on the design, build, and maintenance of the ground systems, test, and launch facilities across multiple locations.

Blue Origin is looking for a motivated leader, dedicated to the expansion of maritime operations in support of space hardware recovery. This role will manage a small group of dedicated maritime professionals and associated vessels in support of Blue Origin's developing maritime operations, with the goal of rapid expansion in capabilities.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Support intermittent offshore operations, providing coverage for critical mission needs
  • Manage responsible vessel engineers and professional crew to maintain asset availability and readiness
  • Support all planning and maintenance needs for Blue Origin maritime assets
  • Create and manage operational budgets
  • Interface directly with the Port Authority for scheduling and coordination
  • Interface directly with 3rd party vendor personnel for chartered assets and coordinating needs and readiness
  • Coordinate offshore asset and personnel schedules to meet mission needs
  • Coordinate vessel logistics to maintain asset availability
  • Assist in the development of new marine asset development and architecture
  • Coordinate changes and needs for existing assets to maintain mission support, including design change and coordination of testing and personnel training

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a BS degree in Marine Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture or Equivalent and 5+ years of marine or aerospace experience
  • Minimum of 5 years or relevant experience as a port engineer or vessel operations manager
  • Merchant Mariner credential (MMC)
  • 2+ years of professional experience working in a role that directly interfaces with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and its associated rules and regulations
  • 2+ years of professional experience working in a role that directly interfaces with US Coast Guard (USCG) vessel inspections and licensing
  • Experience performing work in compliance with CFRs, United States Coast Guard Standards, American Bureau of Shipping Guidelines, and other applicable standards for marine applications
  • Knowledge of vessel management systems and safety management systems
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a positive working culture
  • Strong safety mindset and experience, including hands-on experience planning and conducting hazardous or critical operations
  • Ability to operate, make decisions, lead, and make forward progress in ambiguous environments
  • Experience with critical operations where real-time decision-making affected success criteria
  • Strong personnel, planning, and project management skills
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum
  • Must be willing to travel to other Blue Origin locations as necessary; role may require travel (10-20%)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated innovation with maritime operations, experience with novel maritime concepts and experience working with the USCG on Design Basis Agreements (DBAs)
  • Current USCG Master Unlimited credential with Master of Towing, and DP certifications
  • Chief Engineer Unlimited credential
  • Dynamic positioning unlimited certification (DP2)
  • Current USCG license, and ability to pass relevant USCG examinations and federal facility background checks
  • Ability to work offshore on maritime vessels supporting recovery operations, and for extended periods of time
  • Experience managing vessel operations, crews, maintenance and logistical support
