Job Description

The Laboratory Technician shall evaluate wildland fire chemicals for possible inclusion on the Forest Service Qualified Products List, and for the continued quality assurance testing once those chemicals are qualified. Laboratory testing includes, but is not limited to, test and sample preparation, conducting experiments, data collection, data documentation and analysis, equipment calibration, maintenance and upkeep, record keeping, report writing and correspondence of test results.

  • Prepare test equipment and samples.
  • Select and operate appropriate analytical instruments.
  • Conduct scientific experiments on fire chemicals.
  • Adhere to test protocols and procedures as outlined in specifications, standard test procedures, project study plans and other written documents.
  • Identify acceptable and unacceptable outcomes of test results.
  • Use various computer programs for data collection, analyses and report writing.
  • Provide strong attention to detail in the development of reports and testing
  • Demonstrate strong writing and oral communication skills in the development and presentations of reports.
  • Strict adherence to all laboratory safety rules and practices.
  • Capable of lifting 50lbs and spending extended periods of time standing or walking.


Education

  • Bachelor's degree in a science-related field

Experience

  • Minimum of one (1) year of previous experience working

in a laboratory setting with various chemicals is required.

License, Cert or Registration

  • Current drivers' license
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship
  • The ability to obtain security clearance enabling access to various Government facilities

Special knowledge, skills, & abilities

  • Must possess an excellent understanding of technical issues, ability to communicate verbally and in written form effectively, and the ability to work within U.S. Government contractual realm
  • This position requires the ability to communicate effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Excellent telephone skills and knowledge of troubleshooting using vendors.
  • Success managing multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Adaptable to changing requirements and tasks.
  • Successfully perform basic mathematical functions as required in a business and/or engineering setting.
  • Demonstrate and apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal, or diagram form.
  • Possess problem solving and analytical skills, and the capability to prioritize daily work schedule in keeping with productivity standards.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual will have knowledge of the Microsoft development suite, and the Microsoft Office suite of software and knowledgeable of Web and Network architectures.
