Job Description

The Formulator I performs various tasks associated with the formulation and movement of product, raw materials and other commodities. This position also operates formulation equipment in the production operation to maximize the output of the production line and also performs online maintenance of all production equipment. Our formulators are expected to perform in a safe and responsible manner following all safety rules and procedures.

What your day may look like

  • Formulates raw materials into finished product that conforms to all quality control standards.
  • Completes production sheets accurately.
  • Performs system clean-outs and product changeover between production campaigns.
  • Leads packaging crews.
  • Directs temporary staff.
  • Maintains a clean work environment.
  • Understands plant and production safety.
  • Ensures accurate recording of all personnel assigned to batches and activities using Kronos to accurately track labor hours for job costing.
  • Mixes chemicals in batches using computerized process control systems.
  • Pulls raw material and finished product samples.
  • Verifies proper raw materials are added according to formulas and minimizes waste.
  • Participates in inventory counts.
  • Handles and labels hazardous materials in accordance with regulatory requirements and Helena policy.
  • Properly packages and identifies waste and flush in accordance with regulatory requirements and Helena policy.
  • Operates forklifts, hoists and other material handling equipment in the warehouse and production area to retrieve and deliver raw materials, packaging and finished products to and from the warehouse.
  • Moves operating, formulation and packaging equipment.
  • Completes all production paperwork, batch sheets and quality control paperwork, including data entry into various computer systems in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Complies with all specified quality control methods and documentation.
  • Loads and unloads trucks received at dock and completes related reports.
  • Other work-related duties as assigned by leader.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.

Education and experience needed for this position

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • One year of production/manufacturing experience is required.

Other skills that will help you succeed

  • Can use various types of packaging machinery to perform all functions on the packaging line.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Math skills.
  • Ability to work varying/rotating shifts.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Can stand for long periods of time in extreme hot and/or cold temperatures.
  • Lift truck operator certification is required.
  • Ability to work over 40 hours as needed is required.
  • Capable of passing an OSHA respirator physical is required.

Your work environment and the physical aspects of the job

There are potential hazards associated with any chemical manufacturing business but at Helena Industries safety is our highest priority. We seek out extensive safety measures including engineered solutions and personal protective equipment and put them in place to minimize exposure to anything that could potentially be harmful to our employees.

The work environment for this position is that of a typical plant environment where the noise level is usually moderate to loud. In this position, you will regularly work near moving equipment/mechanical parts and could be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, chemical and biological hazards, vibrations and a risk of electrical shock. This position requires you to use your hands for many different tasks and to talk, hear, walk, stand and sit. You may be occasionally required to lift or move up to 50 pounds.

Lab and office positions at the plant would only have occasional exposure if they must go out into the plant.
