ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsibilities in both instruction and or clinical coordination;
  • Instructing in the most recent core curriculum by AST (Association of Surgical Technology).
  • Recruitment of students.
  • The instructional staff must be responsible for directing, evaluating and reporting student progress toward course objectives and for the periodic review and updating of course material.
  • The clinical coordinators must be responsible for organization, administration, continuous review, planning, development, and general effectiveness of clinical experiences for students enrolled in the surgical technology program. Responsibilities may include didactic and laboratory instruction (in addition to clinical instruction) and direction and guidance of other clinical instructors.
  • Duties involve organizing and providing educational experiences leading to student CST credentialing and gaining full employment as a Surgical Technologist;
  • Establishing program admission criteria, recruitment of students, and adhering to instruction as defined in the didactic and clinical core curriculum;
  • Application and maintaining of accreditation status.
  • Is assigned as an active member of the program Advisory Committee and is to attend these meetings (twice a year).

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • A minimum of three (3) years proven recent surgical technology experience (clinical coordinator).
  • Faculty must be qualified by education and experience, and must be effective in teaching the subjects assigned.

Faculty with instructional responsibilities in core surgical technology must:

  • Possess a CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) credential in the field of surgical technology through a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA). Have a recent minimum of two years of experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past five years.
  • This position requires current knowledge and technical practice skills as a Surgical Technologist
  • Experience with student counseling and coaching in the three domains of learning (cognitive=thinking/critical thinking, affective=emotion and feeling, and psychomotor=physical/kinesthetic).
  • Experience teaching adults in a community college setting and or clinical coordination experience is preferred.
  • All instructors must meet the appropriate credentialing requirements by the ARCSTSA (Accreditation Review Council on Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting).
  • All instructors must meet the appropriate credentialing requirements for the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools (SACS).

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborating with faculty and staff in the IRSC programs in Health Science and with other IRSC program areas.
  • Effectively instructing courses in Surgical Technology.
  • Evaluating student progress through examinations and observations of performance.
  • Actively supporting student success through individual counseling and advising.
  • Participating in department, division, and general adjunct faculty meetings.
  • Maintaining own professional development related to individual, professional, and institutional needs.
  • Accepting direction from the Surgical Technology program director.
  • Adhering to all IRSC policies and procedures.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires an ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time and to present oral lectures/demonstrations, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds. Some lifting of computer and electronic equipment may be required. It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, calculator, telephone, and other equipment as necessary. IRSC expects its employees to follow proper safety standards while employed by the College.
