PURPOSE:
The SMT Engineer is responsible for evaluating, upgrading, implementing, and monitoring SMT processes for the SMT department. The engineer must be able to operate and program SMT automatic assembly equipment such as Screen Printer, Jet Printer, SPI, AOI, Pick & Place, Reflow Oven, and X-ray tool. Including development of oven profiles, paste volume profiles.... etc. Requires strong data interpretation skills, including the ability to make adjustments and improvements to the processes based on data; Including the ability to troubleshooting issues and derive, validate, and document improvements. The ability to thrive in a fast-paced production environment. This role also serves as an assembly expert and is expected to train technicians/operators in most assembly operations as well as participate in process improvements to improve yield and work environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Define SMT assembly process and make improvements to it.
  • Deal with process abnormities using standard problem-solving methods.
  • Improve pass rate and decrease rejection rates.
  • Must be able to troubleshoot and repair SMT equipment.
  • Needs to be able to write and update written work instructions and train personnel to those instructions.
  • Set process parameters.
  • Evaluate new components and new process.
  • Process DFM reviews, work with designers, and implement processes for First Article devices.
  • Be aware of supply chain and how that affects the SMT processes.
  • Create work instructions for, programs for, operate, and train others on SMT equipment.
  • Be able to read schematics, understand PCB design files and have good understanding of electronic components.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase output and improve yield.
  • Manage prioritization of process execution to maximize output based on product run, testing processes, and product due dates.
  • Monitor quality metrics for test areas and address assembly quality issues and trends.
  • Read assembly documentation and understand Bill of Material lists and assembly instructions.
  • Collect, organize, publish, and evaluate Statistical Process Control (SPC) data.
  • Set up, operate, and document specialized equipment and processes.
  • Safely handle chemicals such as solvents and adhesives while adhering to all safety rules and procedures.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Engineering, or related subject.
  • Have extensive knowledge of IPC A610 standards.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in an electronics assembly environment.
  • Minimum of 2 year of experience collecting, organizing and evaluating data.
  • Strong knowledge of electronics assemblies and an advanced technical level understanding of SMT processes.
  • Demonstrated experience meeting aggressive deadlines and tight time frames.
  • Demonstrated flexibility in balancing changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to train others in process methodologies and techniques.
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to write, read, comprehend, and execute complex work instructions.
  • Experience with Microsoft products (Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel and Word).
  • Able to sit or stand for extended periods and work under a microscope.
  • Able to wear safety lab equipment such as lab smock, hair covering, shoe covering, and gloves.
  • Able to work overtime as needed to support production schedule.
  • Able to respond quickly in the case of an emergency such as a chemical spill, building evacuation or power outage.

The pay range for this role in Carlsbad, CA is between $81,400.00/year and $109,890.00/year. The pay range may differ in other locations. FormFactor maintains broad salary ranges for its roles in order to account for variations in education, training, skills, relevant work experience, business needs and market demands. Candidates are typically placed into the range based on the preceding factors as well as internal peer equity.
