QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

The qualifications and skill requirements for this position include:

  • Master's degree with 18-graduate semester hours in chemistry from an accredited institution is required, doctorate degree preferred. Additional graduate work in biology, biochemistry, or related area preferred;
  • Proven knowledge of and preference for experience in teaching Introduction to Chemistry, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and the associated laboratories;
  • Excellent communication skills - both verbal and written;
  • Ability to work with and teach to diverse populations is essential;
  • Ability to apply traditional and innovative technologies is essential;
  • Ability to develop and/or implement strategies to support students' retention, persistence and program completion is essential;
  • Ability to engage students as active partners in the teaching/learning process;
  • Ability to relate the concepts of chemistry to real life situations and applications;
  • Computer literacy and experience using technology in the learning environment is essential;
  • Experience teaching in an online environment preferred;
  • An understanding of learning styles is preferred; willingness to learn is essential;
  • Appropriate credentialing requirements according to the IRSC Faculty Credentialing Manual;
  • Experience teaching at a two-year post-secondary institution preferred.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The general responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing, instructing and grading all class and laboratory coursework;
  • Assigning final grades;
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled hours to meet with students;
  • Ability to use data and assessment tools in the evaluation and improvement of instruction;
  • Engaging in activities to improve student learning, retention, and completion;
  • Serving the community;
  • Serving effectively on college committees.
  • Participating in grant writing individually and/or on a team.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The specific responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing a syllabus for the lecture class and laboratories;
  • Instructing the lecture class and laboratories;
  • Grading all quizzes, tests, and written assignments; and entering grades in Blackboard gradebook on a timely basis;
  • Assigning final grades;
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours to meet with students;
  • Developing and maintaining course management through college's Learning Management system;
  • Participating in Department budget preparation and in course planning and development;
  • Assisting with Departmental projects and programs;
  • Serving on at least one College committee/workgroup;
  • Developing and/or implementing strategies to support students' retention, persistence, and program completion is essential;
  • Completing other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires an ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds. It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, calculator, telephone, and other equipment as necessary. IRSC expects its employees to follow proper safety standards while employed by the College.
