Job Description

Conducts complex experimental research in a research lab, functioning as a specialist or technical expert. Manages one or more phase(s) of a major project(s) or all activities of a small project. Ensures overall lab compliance with all associated rules & regulations.

The Senior Research Technologist will be working in Dr. Aimen Shaaban's Lab.A main focus of research will involve a series of experiments/procedures to monitor specific parameters of fetal surgical models in real time.

Primary responsibilities will include project management, analysis, and oversight of any large animals to be used in the lab's research, namely sheep.

The ideal candidate for this position will have been previously involved in survival surgery conducted on large animals.Knowledge/Skills in this area include, but are not limited to, sterile surgical technique, general husbandry, processing of tissue samples, and a familiarity with the rules and regulations governing the use of large animals in research.

Previous experience working with rodents and colony maintenance is mandatory, as another branch of research involvesin uterocell transplantation with a goal of understanding the mechanisms of tolerance that would allow for the treatment of immunological disorders/disease using donor stem cells or endogenous vesicles. Other duties will include preparing and conducting laboratory research experiments, preparation of reagents, maintaining stock solutions, ordering and maintaining supplies, literature searches, and any other tasks necessary for the smooth operation of the lab.

K.S.A.'s:

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience and 5 years' lab/bench or other relevant experience required; OR Successful completion of a full course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a master's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience and 3 year lab/bench or other relevant experience.

  • Working knowledge of computers, ability to troubleshoot, work independently, and function as a team member is essential. Therefore, experience in regular interaction with outside groups is highly desirable.

  • Excellent command of the English language and the ability to communicate effectively.

  • Strong organizational skills including the ability to establish priorities, react promptly to a large variety of requests, and the ability to keep the workplace clean and organized.

Job Duties:

  • Acting as a technical expert or specialist in a particular field within a research lab, establishes & optimizes protocols & coordinates conduct of multiple complex experiments.

  • Reviews results & revises protocols as necessary to ensure that project objectives are attained.

  • Oversees & manages lab databases which may include ensuring that experiments are observed & thatdata is collected & entered correctly.

  • Reviews & analyzes data.

  • Creates computer models, graphs, reports & summaries for use in publications, professional journals, & grant applications.

  • Co-authors scientific papers for presentation & publication.

  • Researches & obtains funding.

  • Creates & maintains lab manuals regarding operating, safety, etc. procedures.

  • Creates lab financial plan & budget/audit expenses. Obtains sales quotes for lab equipment & supplies.

  • Reviews & adjusts expenses to decrease costs.

  • Oversees repair & maintenance of all lab equipment.

  • Ensures that lab supplies are ready & availablewhen necessary.

  • Other job functions as assigned.
