Position Summary

Metropolitan State University of Denver is seeking applicants to serve as academic advisors for the students at our institution. We may be hiring up to two advisors. These are in person positions that require the candidates selected for hire to work on campus. Currently, we have opportunities within our College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences. There may be future opportunities in other colleges on campus.


Academic Advisors atMSUDenver are primarily responsible for advising a caseload of students on degree requirements and providing long-term degree planning. Academic advisors help students develop educational goals and define a career path through use of a variety of advising approaches and tools. The advisors monitor student progress, making targeted outreach to students to address potential obstacles in retention and graduation. Academic advisors also participate in University wide and unit-specific advising initiatives.

In addition to the responsibilities above, the Academic Advisor II atMSUDenver works with advising leadership, immediate supervisors, and faculty and/or staff where appropriate, to understand advising and retention data and student success implementation strategies. Assisting with and/or participating in recruiting events may also be required.

Examples of Work Performed


Providing advising services to a diverse group of students
  • Conduct advising sessions with students, assist with course selection, scheduling and registration questions using advising-based technology.
  • Utilize knowledge of curriculum to help students with long-term degree planning.
  • Prepare and maintain advising documentation in the current student success/customer management system.
  • Refer students to appropriate University resources.
  • Provide basic information related to career planning, financial literacy, admissions and other applicable information related to student needs.
  • Teach students about electronic advising and registration tools and how to best utilize them for success (e.g. Degree Progress Reports, Student Hub, Student Success Collaborative suite, etc.).
  • Participate in New Student Orientation sessions and Registration events.
  • Participate in recruiting events.

Monitor progress and retention of assigned students
  • Utilize advising-based systems to track and engage assigned students who are at-risk of not being retained (Early Alert).
  • Deliver appropriate student-centered outreach with a lens towards diversity and inclusivity.
  • Participate in retention initiatives.

Professional development
  • Build knowledge of advising techniques and approaches.
  • Participate in university-wide and unit specific advising professional development opportunities (e.g., advising retreats,NACADAwebinars, conferences, etc.).
  • Serve on committees, councils, taskforces, etc. where appropriate.

Required Qualifications

Academic Advisor I
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Demonstrated experience in a professional setting helping others reach their academic, professional, and/or personal goals
  • Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to a diverse community (students, faculty, staff, alumni and parents)
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, prioritizing, and preparation skills

Academic Advisor II
  • Bachelor's degree and three years of experience as a full-time academic advisor
  • Experience using computer-based student information system(s) (e.g. Ellucian Banner, PeopleSoft, CampusVue, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience with advising techniques or approaches at an accredited institution
  • Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to a diverse university community (students, faculty, staff, alumni and parents)
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications

Academic Advisor I
  • Master's degree in either Higher Education, College Personnel, Counseling, or an academic discipline
  • Experience using computer-based student information system(s) (e.g. Ellucian Banner, PeopleSoft, CampusVue, etc.)
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) proficiency desirable
  • Experience working with and/or being sensitive to the educational needs of a diverse urban population

Academic Advisor II
  • Master's degree in either Higher Education, College Personnel, Counseling, or an academic discipline
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) proficiency desirable
  • Experience working with and/or being sensitive to the educational needs of a diverse urban population
  • Demonstrated experience in accessing, understanding, and/or using student data for successful outcomes
  • Experience assisting with developing and/or leading trainings, workshops or presentations

Work Hours/Type

Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

Salary for Announcement

The salary ranges for these positions have been established at:
Academic Advisor I: $49,000 - $51,000
Academic Advisor II: $50,000 - $55,000

The salaries of the finalists selected for these roles will be set based upon a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, training, and qualifications.
