PRIMARY PURPOSE/GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Scripps College invites applications to a Research Technician position in the Solomon-Lane Laboratory in the Neuroscience Discipline of the Department of Natural Sciences. Research in the lab focuses on the development of social behavior and its regulation by behavioral, endocrine, and neural mechanisms using a fish model system. The NSF-funded project will specifically investigate early-life social experiences and how they shape behavioral phenotype long-term via developmental plasticity in underlying neural mechanisms, including vasopressin and stress axis signaling.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

This information is intended to be a descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position.The list of essential functions below does not identify all duties performed by any single incumbent in this position.Perform other duties as assigned.

Following initial training by the Principal Investigator, the technician will work in coordination with the Principal Investigator and undergraduate researchers to conduct and implement all experimental aspects of the funded project. These include (but are not limited to):

  • behavioral testing; behavior scoring (manual and automated tracking); pharmacological manipulations; hormone sample collection and measurement using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays; microdissection, including collecting brain tissue; processing and analysis of brain tissue using RNAscope; microscopy; processing brain tissue and measurement of gene expression (qPCR, Tag-Seq); and data processing and statistical analysis.
  • The technician will participate in animal care and assist with maintaining compliance for internal and external regulatory agencies (IACUC), as well as monitoring lab supplies, and basic maintenance of laboratory equipment.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

Individuals must possess knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Prior experience with one or more relevant scientific techniques (e.g., behavior testing, histology, microscopy, qPCR, transcriptomics) is preferred, but not required.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience, Biology, Psychology, or a related field, or any combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the job.

At least one year of relevant research experience is required.

HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:

This is a temporary status, full time (40 hours per week), benefits eligible, non-exempt

position. The position is scheduled to begin on or around May 1, 2024, and is

anticipated to end on or before June 30, 2025. The assignment may be extended upon

mutual agreement of both parties.

The regular hours for this position are Monday-Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm. Hours may vary due to the needs of the Lab.

Hourly rate range: $17.00-$18.00. The hourly rate of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

None.
