Job Summary

The Associate Dean for Administration and Finance for the School of Medicine Vice Dean's Office at Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG) is the designated Vice Dean's Office representative to hospital-wide activities related to maintaining and improving patient care and hospital operations. The position functions as a facilitator or as Dean's Office representative to relevant committees, work groups, and task forces across both ZSFG and UCSF including the ZSFG Executive Committee.

On an on-going basis, this position works closely with ZSFG Senior Hospital Associates (CEO, COO, CMO, and CNO), the San Francisco Health Network (SFHN), UCSF (SOM Vice Dean for Administration and Finance and SOM Department Managers).

The Associate Dean for Administration and Finance reports directly to the Vice Dean and indirectly to the SOM Vice Dean of Administration and Finance. The position is delegated operational and financial oversight for the ZSFG Dean's Office in the absence of the Vice Dean.

The Associate Dean for Administration and Finance is responsible for all of the administrative and financial elements of the Vice Dean's Office, as outlined in the Department Description below.

Department Description

School of Medicine Vice Dean's Office at ZSFG

The School of Medicine Vice Dean's Office at ZSFG supports the clinical, teaching and research activities of the UCSF faculty, residents, students and staff at ZSFG that are intended, in partnership with the administration of DPH, to support the missions of UCSF and ZSFG.

Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG) has been a training hospital for UCSF since 1872. The Affiliation Agreement between the UCSF School of Medicine and the City/County of San Francisco includes providing all of the professional medical staff at ZSFG across approximately 40 service lines. Currently, there are over 700 active and courtesy UCSF faculty who work at ZSFG. UCSF also operates undergraduate and postgraduate medical training programs at ZSFG. More than 900 UCSF residents and 350 medical students rotate at ZSFG each year. There are approximately 450 clinical staff and approximately 500 administrative and research staff who are based at ZSFG.

The Vice Dean's Office is directly responsible for the following areas:


Resource Management:

    • Finance: The Vice Dean's Office is responsible for the acquisition, allocation, and oversight of the Affiliation Agreement, which is approximately $260M in FY25. The Vice Dean's Office is also responsible for the management of the Clinical Practice Group (CPG), which has an annual operating budget of approximately $8M and manages approximately $90M in annual revenue from various sources.
    • Space: The Vice Dean's Office is responsible for the governance and space allocations of the approximately 175,000 square feet within Pride Hall, a UCSF-owned and operated building on the ZSFG campus. The Vice Dean's Office is also responsible for negotiating for additional clinical space for UCSF personnel within ZSFG hospital buildings.
Dean's Office Administration and Operations:
The Vice Dean's Office oversees the following UCSF operational units based at ZSFG:
      • Operations and Resident Administration
      • Finance (3 FTE and $260M budget)
      • Clinical Practice Group (40 FTE and operating budget of $8M and annual review of $90M)
      • Risk and Privacy
      • Network and Server Team (4 FTE)
      • Biomed (13 FTE)
      • Lab Medicine (150 FTE and $30M annual budget)
UCSF Department at ZSFG Management and Oversight:
  • Responsibilities include recruitments of Service Chiefs and Department Managers, ensuring that all UCSF personnel comply with ZSFG requirements, as outlined in the Affiliation Agreement, and advocating with CCSF and UCSF to support the needs of the Departments.
Relationship Management:
  • The Vice Dean's Office serves the role as the connection between both UCSF and the Department of Public Health. The office is responsible for representing and advocating for UCSF personnel with both the larger UCSF and the DPH.

The research grants/contracts under the management of the Chiefs of Service at ZSFG total approximately $200M in annual direct and indirect dollars.






Required Qualifications

  • Excellent leadership abilities to oversee multiple functions or departments through subordinate managers.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; accounting and payroll.
  • Excellent skills to work collaboratively and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniques.
  • Skills in establishing and implementing customer service standards. Excellent ability to establish metrics for department and employee goals which measure effectiveness of contributions to efficient operations of department.
  • Strong knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Advanced project management skills, including the capability to manage capital projects.
  • Advanced knowledge of administrative management theory and ability to translate this knowledge into practice.
  • Advanced skills in strategy development, systems planning and change management.
  • 10+ years of experience hiring, managing, and motivating teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area such as business, public health, administration, accounting, finance and/or 10+ years of equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in a public teaching hospital, academic medical center and/or UCSF.
Master's degree such as MPA or MPH preferred.
