Job Description
Responsible for set-up and operation of manual mills, lathes and presses.

Essential Functions:

  • Sets up and operates manual mills, lathes, presses and hand tools.
  • Completes tasks with little or no supervision.
  • Optimize process to achieve maximum efficiency.
  • Receive daily instructions from Shop Floor Supervisor.
  • Check parts to ensure they meet blueprint specifications using proper gauges.
  • Perform daily point checks on machine and report concerns to Shop Floor Supervisor.(Noted leaks, noises, functionality)
  • Use proper feed and speed for maximum efficiency.
  • Deburr as required for work in process.
  • Train new hires or apprentices as requested.
  • Follows all safety policies and procedures.
  • Meets departmental/company goals and objectives in a timely manner. (Such as: efficiencies, scrap control, time motion and setup time reductions.)
  • Arrives to work, meetings, appointments, and other work-related functions on time and as scheduled. Interpretation of drawings, sketches, and/or working to set up sheets and verbal instructions.
  • Adapting shop practice, methods, and techniques to fit each new situation and properly sequencing machining operations.
  • Performing cutting, turning, drilling, boring, reaming, tapping, and finishing operations where tolerances range from 0.010 to 0.0001 inch. This includes setup of machine and fixtures for any of the various operations while working with materials.
  • Use of scales, calipers, internal and external micrometers, height gauges, surface gauge, etc. to determine that the part is being machined to the proper configuration.
  • May also work in conjunction with other team members running parts such as with the Makino machines.
  • Perform other duties as may be required.

Required Education, Skills & Experience:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Four-year apprenticeship program (ie. Vocational Technical School) preferred but not required.
  • Must own tools supply for daily tasks (i.e. micrometers, indicators, edge finders, etc.)
  • Five years' experience either in a production or job shop environment.
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints/engineering drawings and work order instructions.
  • Must have a working knowledge of computers.
  • Must be able to take verbal and written instructions.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal, written, and communication skills.

Other Required Experience:

  • Set up and operates manual mills, lathes, and presses.
  • Basic math skills
  • Use of scales, calipers, internal and external micrometers, height gauges etc.
  • Follow Documented Procedures (work instructions)
  • Read blue prints
  • Simple trigonometry and/or geometry calculations
  • Specialized understanding & use of blueprints.
  • Design, build, modify and rework tooling, fixtures and drill jigs.
  • Completes tasks with little or no supervision.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
To perform the essential functions of the role, employees must be able to perform the following activities with or without reasonable accommodations:
  • Regularly stand and walk throughout the facility, stand for long periods to perform job duties
  • Regularly lift, carry (short distances), and push/pull up to 100 pounds using peer assistance and/or other lifting & material-handling equipment
  • Frequently reaches overhead and reaches out or down to perform duties
  • Frequently climb steps, stairs, or ladders
  • Frequently bend, crawl, stoop, squat, or kneel
  • Frequently uses hand or fingers to manually inspect parts and operate sprayers and other machine and material handling controls
  • Accurately distinguish colors to select and apply correct paints
  • Visual acuity to interpret readings on gauges and other measuring devices
  • Wears dust mask, respirator, and other PPE as required; pulmonary capacity testing may be required for respirator use
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a manufacturing shop environment where working conditions may vary significantly; the employee will be exposed to:
  • Excessive noise (hearing protection required)
  • Dust, smoke, mist, fumes/vapors (regularly)
  • Extreme temperatures (occasionally)
  • Hazardous equipment including forklifts, hand tools, cranes or other lifting devices, and other equipment used in a machine shop environment (continually)
The use of PPE, including hearing protection, eye and hand protection, respiratory protection, and use of safety footwear is required
