We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Senior Policy Analyst II on our Advocacy team. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office, requiring 3 days a week in the office.

As a Senior Policy Analyst II, you will provide high-level policy analyses on key AMA Advocacy Group issues; prepare reports on critical and emerging socioeconomic issues impacting the practice of medicine; and provide professional staffing to significantly visible physician committees, including the Council on Medical Service, the Board of Trustees and the House of Delegates.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Policy Development

  • Develop leading-edge policy for the AMA to high visibility physician committees, including the Council on Medical Service, the Board of Trustees and the House of Delegates.
  • Prepare thoughtful Council on Medical Service reports that contain proactive recommendations that advance AMA policy on key socioeconomic issues such as health care costs, price transparency, physician payment, and long-term Medicare reform.
  • Develop Board of Trustees reports, staff management reports and other materials as assigned.
Policy Analysis
  • Provide high-level educational policy analyses on key Advocacy Group issues; in order to develop, implement and advocate policy recommendations on those issues.
  • Create advocacy communication materials to highlight critical and emerging socioeconomic issues impacting the practice of medicine; and in areas of expertise that are aimed at physicians and other key health policy audiences.
  • Prepare correspondence and briefing materials for senior management and AMA officers on key socioeconomic issues.
  • Work with Advocacy Group and other AMA units to provide critical policy support and analyses.
  • Proactively participate in high-level staff work groups, as assigned.
External Support/Collaboration
  • Serve as resource and/or principal staff for socioeconomic-oriented Reference Committees at meetings of the AMA House of Delegates.
  • Participate in research and strategy development for reports and resolutions assigned to Reference Committee; and communicate with key AMA staff to ensure comprehensive understanding of policy or advocacy implications of each item in the context of AMA strategic priorities.
  • Assist in preparation of briefing materials for Reference Committee members, the Board of Trustees, and senior staff; and provide the Committee with relevant and insightful background to assist in developing report recommendations.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to produce concise Reference Committee reports with accurate and persuasive recommendations.

May include other responsibilities as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Graduate or professional degree required, preferably in a health-related field.
  2. Minimum 5 years of experience in the health care industry.
  3. Excellent writing skills, with the ability to create a variety of document types for different audiences that require minimal revision.
  4. Strong research and analytical skills, including the ability to independently and efficiently locate information, evaluate source quality and research methodologies, and present findings in a concise, logical manner.
  5. Exceptional oral communication skills, with the ability to present clear and cogent arguments.
  6. Experience working with physicians and/or organized physician committees.
  7. Knowledge of and/or previous analysis and policy development of health systems or health insurance issues preferred.
  8. Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  9. Strong project management skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks and schedule activities to meet deadlines.
  10. Some travel and weekend meetings required.
