Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications from graduating Amherst College seniors or recent alumni for the Mathematics Quantitative Fellow position. The Mathematics Quantitative Fellow is a full-time, fixed-term position from July 2024 to June 2025, starting at $19.33 per hour. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Mathematics Quantitative Fellow is a "green dean" position for a recent Amherst College graduate to provide learning support for students in intermediate Math courses and to encourage students with a wide variety of backgrounds, including groups under-represented in mathematics, first-generation college students, and students with varying mathematical preparation. The Fellow also supports students preparing to take the departmental Comprehensive exam.

Summary of Responsibilities:
  • Providing support for a highly diverse group of students in intermediate mathematics courses. Support is in the form of drop-in tutoring, appointments and workshops for students in two courses each semester including Math 220, 271, 350 or 355
  • Coordinating with faculty members and Math staff in the Moss Quantitative Center to decide on division of support and scheduling
  • Working with the Q Center director on planning and college trainings
  • Providing support during January for students taking the Mathematics Comprehensive Exam or the Honors Qualifying Exam
  • Involvement in campus life and events


Qualifications:

Required
  • Requires a BA from Amherst College
  • A major in Math or strong math background, including the ability to assist students with Math 220, 271, 350 or 355
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Facility with online communication and email
  • Commitment to working with a diverse community
  • Good judgment working with students and faculty


Preferred
  • Tutoring experience at Amherst College
