What We Do
At the SEI AI Division, we conduct research in applied artificial intelligence and the engineering questions related to the practical design and implementation of AI technologies and systems. We currently lead a community-wide movement to mature the discipline of AI Engineering for Defense and National Security.

- build real-world, mission-scale AI capabilities through solving practical engineering problems
- discover and define the processes, practices, and tools to support operationalizing AI for robust, secure, scalable, and human-centered mission capabilities
- prepare our customers to be ready for the unique challenges of adopting, deploying, using, and maintaining AI capabilities
- identify and investigate emerging AI and AI-adjacent technologies that are rapidly transforming the technology landscape

Position Summary

As the Deputy Director on our team, you will lead, shape, and manage the business, execution, and overall operations of the division and work in partnership with the AI Division and SEI leadership team on vision, strategy, planning, and execution of our work to maximize our impact in helping customers understand, leverage, and adopt AI in reliable and responsible ways.

Requirements

  • Management Experience and Expertise: You have significant experience in both organizational and personnel management in defense, national security, and technology-focused organizations. You have mentored, managed, and led teams of diverse personnel from a variety of backgrounds with a focus on development and growth of individuals, teams, and organizations.
  • Leadership and Business Acumen: You have a proven ability to engage stakeholders and customers and shape and grow a high-impact research and development portfolio. You have established, grown, and led organizations and initiatives that drive innovation and organizational change with a focus on positive impact to individuals, customers, and the organization. You know how to lead and manage in complex environments, including successfully navigating bureaucracy to accomplish mission and business objectives, having strong influence without direct authority, and attracting, growing, and empowering a highly talented team.
  • Mission Focus: You have a passion for the missions of defense and national security and a strong familiarity with how DoD and related government organizations operate. You understand the opportunities to make significant positive impact on mission capabilities through the smart application of artificial intelligence and related technologies. You have knowledge of and experience working with government mission organizations.
  • Awareness of Government Research and Innovation: You have a strong working knowledge of how DoD and related government organizations fund and conduct research and innovation. You are knowledgeable about the current DoD innovation ecosystem and how a software-focused Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) at a major research university can and should fit into that ecosystem.
  • Communication and Connection Expertise: You are an excellent communicator and are comfortable engaging at all levels of government, industry, and academic organizations. You can interact collaboratively and diplomatically with customers and colleagues at all levels of experience and knowledge. You grasp the big picture, direction, and goals of an effort while having the natural ability to dig into the details on problems and complex concepts and provide clear direction. You are a natural connector who knows the importance of strong and diverse collaboration networks and how to build and maintain them.

Duties

  • Division Leadership: As Deputy Director, you will work with the Division Director and management team to lead and oversee all business and operational aspects of the division and will develop and shape division initiatives as we continue to grow. You will develop and maintain strong relationships with other technical and business units at the SEI and CMU and work in partnership with those units to ensure that the SEI is always moving into the future.
  • Talent Development and Management: You will help identify, recruit, retain, mentor, develop, and manage a high-caliber, interdisciplinary team of engineers, technical managers, research scientists, administrative staff, product managers, designers, and technology developers.
  • Strategy and Growth: You will contribute to our continual process of planning, developing, and carrying out an overall technology and business strategy. You will provide advice and counsel to the AI Division Director. You will contribute to strategies and plans for the SEI at large. You will help strengthen and grow the business, technical, and operational capabilities of the division to increase the impact of our work for our customers.
  • Customer and Stakeholder Engagement: You will regularly engage with customers and stakeholders. You will represent the AI Division portfolio by presenting and showcasing our work to customers, sponsors, and partners. You will help build and maintain relationships with the DoD innovation and technology ecosystem including relevant mission, research, and technology development communities.

Other Requirements

  • Flexible to travel to Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C., sponsor sites, conferences, and other meetings. Moderate (up to 40%) travel outside of your home location. Pittsburgh is the preferred work location. Consideration will also be given to basing the Deputy Director at our Arlington location with the expectation of spending at least one week per month in Pittsburgh.
  • An advanced degree or doctorate in a relevant technical field with organizational leadership experience or an advanced degree or doctorate in a business-related field with experience leading technical organizations are strongly preferred.
  • You will be subject to a background investigation and must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance.
  • Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.
