Job Summary

University College provides services and programs to assist incoming students in transitioning to Illinois State University. The Julia N. Visor Academic Center is seeking a motivated undergraduate Peer Instructor to co-teach IDS 128: Thriving in College, Career, and Beyond. This course is designed to support incoming students in their transition to ISU life. This position offers an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students who are interested in gaining leadership experience while guiding their peers through the opportunities and challenges of their first year at ISU.

Peer Instructors are students who are interested in helping new students acclimate to our campus classrooms and community. These students serve as role models and resources as they co-instruct a section of IDS 108 or IDS 128 with a faculty or staff member.

Duties will include:
- Attending your assigned class section and meeting regularly with a faculty instructor for planning purposes
- Assisting an instructor with class discussions and planning course activities
- Providing a peer perspective for first-year students
- Attending mandatory trainings provided by Visor Center staff
- Attending mandatory biweekly group meetings with the Peer Instructor Supervisor
- Supporting other Peer Instructors through community experience events

Additional Information

Duties will also include:
- Collaborating with a faculty instructor to co-teach a section of IDS 128, which covers topics like academic success strategies, campus resources, career exploration, student engagement, and personal development
- Providing peer perspective when co-leading discussions, group activities, and lessons aimed at promoting student engagement, critical thinking, and reflection
- Promoting a positive and inclusive learning environment where all students feel valued, respected, and empowered to participate actively in class discussions and activities
- Collaborating with faculty instructor, staff, and other peer instructors to enhance the effectiveness of the first-year experience course and support student success initiatives across campus

Pay Rate

$14.00 hourly

Required Qualifications

- Applicants must have an overall GPA of at least a 2.5
- Applicants must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student and in good standing with Illinois State University as it relates to student conduct

Preferred Qualifications

- Knowledge of campus resources and support services available to students
- Enthusiasm for working with first-year students and helping them navigate the transition to college life
- Previous IDS 108 or IDS 128 program experience
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities effectively
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect effectively with diverse groups of students

Work Hours

This position requires approximately 4-6 hours per week, including class time, office hours/preparation, and biweekly meetings.
