Job Description

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is seeking to hire a Research Technologistto join the research program in our laboratory focused on bacterial cell biology within the Biological Chemistry department to investigate the molecular mechanisms that bacterial cells use to grow and adapt in diverse environments. As part of our team, the employee will collaborate with the Principal Investigator (PI) and other lab members to implement protocols and participate in study-related activities on several projects. Under the supervision by and regular discussions with the PI, the candidate will perform laboratory experiments on independent research projects. Will work with a postdoctoral fellow or PhD student in the laboratory, the candidate will participate in a project isolating, expanding, and cataloging a library of mutants of the obligate intracellular bacterium Rickettsia parkeri. The candidate may participate in additional collaborative projects related to growth and adaptation of R. parkeri and Caulobacter crescentus. With direction by and support from the PI, the candidate will help to maintain and circulate research protocols among laboratory members, set agendas and schedules for routine research-related meetings and other activities, and prepare shared laboratory reagents. With guidance from the PI, the candidate will also function in capacities required for laboratory function, including ordering reagents.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory techniques including but not limited to molecular cloning, PCR, Western blotting, bacterial and eukaryotic cell culture, and bacterial genetics.
  • Keep an up-to-date and comprehensive laboratory notebook; organize and catalog bacterial strain libraries.
  • Incorporate new technologies into the laboratory as needed.
  • Collaborate with the PI in ordering routine lab supplies and reagents.
  • Will assist the PI in organization of the laboratory and the completion of experiments and will routinely communicate with lab members regarding scientific and other issues.
  • Collaborate with lab members in maintaining lab stocks, solutions, media, and reagents.
  • Act as a resource for laboratory techniques for post-doctoral fellow and students.
  • Help to orient new members of the laboratory.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biochemistry or related field.
  • Exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills; attention to detail; strong work ethic.
  • At least 6 months' experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques.


Preferred Qualifications
  • One or more years' full-time experience in a comparable lab setting.
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.
