Job Summary

The Pediatric Clinical Supervisor reports to the Pediatric Rehab Services Assistant Director and serves as the operational supervisor for the inpatient staff at Mission Bay. The incumbent provides discipline-specific clinical supervision to inpatient and outpatient PTs, PTAs, OTs , in coordination with other discipline-specific leaders (ie. SLP, OT). The incumbent is directly responsible for evaluating and assuring the quality of work performed by the specific therapy discipline meets departmental, organizational, professional, and regulatory standards. As such, the Clinical Supervisor is a recognized expert and source of knowledge in the specific therapy discipline and serves as the immediate supervisor of all discipline-specific staff, Resident(s), Fellow(s), and students.

The Pediatric Clinical Supervisor independently performs routine and complex patient evaluations and therapeutic interventions within the scope of clinical practice. In addition, the Supervisor serves as a consultant to staff, students and other medical professionals in discipline-specific patient evaluations, therapeutic intervention planning or intervention across the array of services provided by the specific discipline. While performing job duties, the position may also supervise support personnel as allowed by discipline specific State Practice Acts including Therapy Assistants and Rehabilitation Aides as well as students. At the Mission Bay Campus, the Clinical Supervisor works primarily with neonate, pediatric and adolescent patients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. The Supervisor may also work with pediatric patients in the Outpatient Pedi Rehab Clinic; and/or adult inpatients at the Bakar Cancer Hospital, Betty Irene Moore Women's Hospital located at Mission Bay, Helen Diller Medical Center located at Parnassus Heights Campus, or Mount Zion Hospital, as needed and trained to do.

As a member of the Leadership Team, the Supervisor works with the other discipline-specific Clinical Supervisors, the Pediatric Rehab Services Assistant Director and other stakeholders to make recommendations for and plan implementation of any changes in patient care procedures, protocols or programs provided by the specific discipline. The Supervisor leads staff development and staff engagement activities, including annual performance evaluations, for all rehab staff within the specific therapy discipline. The Clinical Supervisor makes recommendations for staffing guidelines, supply and equipment needs required to meet the needs of patients served at the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco.

The Supervisor is responsible for actively supporting initiatives to further the Mission of UCSF, including participation in Lean process improvement activities, hospital-wide committees and workgroups, and clinical education programs at UCSF and in the community.

Department Description

The Department of Rehabilitation Services at UCSF Health provides Occupational, Physical and Speech/Dysphagia Therapy for adult inpatients at UCSF Hellen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights and Mount Zion Hospital; pediatric inpatients, acute rehabilitation patients and outpatients at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital; and adult outpatients at Physical Therapy Faculty Practice clinic locations.

The Inpatient Rehabilitation Services Department at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco provides clinical services to neonate, pediatric, and adolescent inpatients as well as adults in the Bakar Cancer Hospital and Betty Irene Moore Women's Hospital, working with a multidisciplinary care team to improve the function and cognition of patients in critical care, transitional care, and general ward locations.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Demonstrates subject matter knowledge of therapy discipline. Ability to apply principles to designated setting to ensure operations meet regulatory standards.
    • Minimum five (5) years of general acute care experience, with at least one year of pediatric acute care clinical experience
    • Minimum one (1) year of prior experience as a Supervisor or Clinical Leader
    • Minimum 150 hours of related clinical and/or professional coursework including lecture/lab
  • Possession of, or proven eligibility for, licensure in the State of California in the related clinical discipline.
  • Knowledge and ability to monitor compliance with relevant rehabilitation patient care / equipment management federal, state and local laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in training, mentoring and guiding employees in Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy techniques. Motivates and inspires staff to improve patient care services. Actively cooperates and supports the work of others.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, challenging environment.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with assigned staff, patients, and interdisciplinary team members part of the rehabilitation patient care plan.
  • Skills to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies. Demonstrated ability to solve problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with patients and members of the healthcare team across the continuum of care. Skills to actively listen, persuade, advise, and counsel.
  • Knowledge of organization's patient care documentation technology to teach others, recommend and oversee improvements and troubleshoot issues.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possession of formal professional Board certification in a Clinical Specialty Area
  • Possession of, or proven eligibility for, licensure in the State of California in the related clinical discipline.
  • Master's or Doctorate degree in related field
  • Prior experience working on an interdisciplinary health provider team
  • Prior experience with Epic clinical documentation, billing, and scheduling tools.
  • Prior clinical and/or leadership experience in an academic medical center
  • Ability to organize assigned staff and unit operations in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Solid knowledge of medical center, HR and UC policies and processes.

License/Certification

  • Possession of current certification in Basic Life Support provisioned by the American Heart Association.
  • Possession of, or proven eligibility for, licensure in the State of California in the related clinical discipline.
