The Opportunity:

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is currently recruiting for a Grounds Supervisor to work on the facilities team. The Grounds Supervisor provides basic supervision to Grounds Crew leaders and service personnel daily. This position is responsible for scheduling and performing inspections on the landscaped grounds, parking lots, roads, fencing, and drainage systems. They will coordinate the installation of new and renovation of old landscaping including, but not limited to turf, trees, shrubs, and flowerbeds. They will inspect and coordinate the maintenance and renovation, and repair of all exterior athletic and recreational facilities. This position provides emergency response, as appropriate, to exterior hazardous conditions, as well as assist with various special events, set-ups, and building service functions as needed.

Responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for planning, scheduling, and inspecting all landscaped areas ensuring appropriate and consistent appearance.
  • Supervise crew leaders and team members. This includes annual evaluation of crew leaders and grounds keepers, maintaining schedules, and labor records. Train or coordinate the training of new personnel on computerized labor records and policies and procedures of the department and University.
  • Through crew leaders, the Ground Supervisor will coordinate the work for and the maintenance of campus grounds including hours worked and materials used.
  • Through the Work Order system, will ensure the support of all approved special events and non-routine requests.
  • Responsible for requesting equipment and supplies and ordering upon approval.
  • Other duties as assigned to ensure the continued operation of this division's responsibilities and the goals of the University.
  • Work hours may vary.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • At least 2-3 years of grounds experience

Required licenses, certificates, and /or security clearances:

  • Candidate will be expected to obtain a Limited Lawn and Ornamental Pesticide License (LLO) by the State of Florida within the first 90 days of employment. We are excited to share that Embry-Riddle will cover the cost for the Grounds Supervisor to obtain a Limited Lawn and Ornamental License. Additionally, we fully support and fund continuing education expenses related to this license, ensuring that you have the resources and support necessary to enhance your skills and knowledge in this field.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid, US driver's license. In some instances, a valid Class C (CDL) license may be required.
  • Must meet the University's standards for approved drivers. Unacceptable driving records (as stated in the Use of Equipment and Vehicles Procedure 1.17) include the following (for three years from the date of each occurrence):
  • Three (3) or more at-fault accidents and/or moving violations in the previous 36 months.
  • Two (2) or more at-fault accidents or two (2) or more moving violations in the past year.
  • Conviction for driving while impaired (DWl, DUl within the last five (5) years).
  • Conviction for death by vehicle, hit and run, racing, careless and reckless driving, implied consent in the previous five (5) years.
  • Serious violations result in immediate disqualification and revocation of driver privileges. The following are examples of serious violations:
  • Speeding over 15 mph of the posted limit, driving under the Influence of alcohol or drugs, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless or careless driving, Use of vehicle in (drug trafficking, reckless homicide, soliciting), unlawful use of weapons, driving under suspension or revocation, fleeing a police officer, vehicle theft, Improper or illegal lane change, following too close, and passing a stopped school bus while stop sign is engaged.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Must be able to communicate both verbally and in writing, with the ability to comprehend basic instructions and to respond effectively.
  • Experience managing a team.
  • Must be able to operate a standard shift vehicle.
  • Ability to operate all power equipment as related to grounds maintenance.
  • Basic knowledge in all areas of grounds maintenance and horticulture.
  • Ability to climb ladders or scaffolding and work in overhead areas.
  • Ability to give and to comprehend basic instructions and to respond effectively.
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry miscellaneous grounds equipment or supplies short distances and to push or pull various grounds maintenance equipment. Eye-hand coordination is essential for proper operation of power tools and other work associated with grounds maintenance.
  • Employee must take necessary precautions due to the nature of the equipment they are working with and the outside elements they are subjected to, to protect themselves and those around them of the hazards associate with this type of work.
  • Must be able to identify all common weeds in campus turf and landscaped beds.

Preferred qualifications and/or licensure:

  • At least 1 year of irrigation and pest control experience.
  • Limited Lawn and Ornamental License by the State of Florida.
