Position Summary

Allan Hancock College is accepting applications to establish a pool of qualified candidates for temporary clerical positions at the Santa Maria Campus and Lompoc Valley Center. Some positions will require Bilingual (English/Spanish) speaking skills.


Under the direction of the Basic Needs Program Supervisor, the temporary position of Program Specialist will support the Basic Needs Center, its CalFresh outreach efforts and its day-to-day operation. The Program Specialist will support students through one-on-one intake appointments, navigation of campus resources and refer students to services that address students' basic needs including but not limited to food, housing, academic counseling services, mental health, emergency funding, and other on and/or off campus resources.
Essential Functions and Qualifications

1. Assist with student case management, conduct one-on-one student intakes, and follow up with students to conduct referrals to campus and community resources
2. Develop and conduct outreach workshops in collaboration with the Basic Needs Program Supervisor related to Basic Needs Resources, such as CalFresh and other food and wellness support programs
3. Assist with CalFresh applications, outreach and follow-up with student applicants and county partners
4. Collaborate with student services, student organizations, faculty, and community resources to conduct in-classroom presentations about Basic Needs, CalFresh, and other support programs
5. In collaboration with the Program Supervisor, support and guide the Basic Need and CalFresh outreach efforts of Basic Needs student workers at workshops, campus events, and in-classroom presentations
6. Perform other duties related to supporting the Basic Needs Center, its outreach efforts, and day-to-day operation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to multi- task and work in a fast- paced work environment with frequent interruptions
  • Experience with case management and conducting referrals
  • Workshop development and facilitation experience
  • Comfortable with public speaking in large classroom settings
  • Knowledge and understanding of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  • Relevant experience working in a higher education, social services, or nonprofit setting
  • Experience working with diverse populations (i.e. students who identify as low-income, students of color, undocumented, justice impacted, student parents, foster youth, and/or neurodivergent)
  • Experience supporting students through crisis and trauma
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish and/or Mixteco)
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree required

  • Preferred degrees related to education, psychology, social and behavioral sciences, or sociology
Preferred Background:
  • Experience in Community College or Social Services
Additional Information

Please note that this position is temporary, part-time, and does not include benefits. Work hours are set to change based on student and center coverage needs.

Work Schedule: Monday- Thursday: 10- 6 pm and Fridays: 10- 4 pm, if needed
Salary: $31.00 an hour
