Job Summary

The majority of the graduate teaching assistants' primary duties are in support of instruction including but not limited to the responsibilities below:
1. Serve as a primary or secondary teaching instructor in a class or a laboratory.
2. Assist a faculty member with teaching-related tasks.
3. Grade student assignments which require knowledge of subjects taught in a class or laboratory.
4. Meet with and/or tutor students, hold office hours, prepare instructional materials, and assist during class and/or lab, etc.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

1300.00/month

Required Qualifications

1. Eligible for appointment as per the requirements in the Graduate Assistant Handbook which can be found at http://hr.illinoisstate.edu/downloads/GA_Handbook.pdf
2. Must be a degree seeking graduate student at Illinois State University
3. Minimum GPA 3.0
4. TOEFL score of 550 paper or 213 computer.

Work Hours

Course to teach as assigned (between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.)

Special Instructions for Applicants

In order to be considered for a graduate teaching assistantship, please complete the application and submit a brief speech sample via telephone recording (instructions below). Native Spanish Speakers may disregard this step.

1. Call 309-438-4475, listen to the instructions, and record your speech sample in the target language as directed. Include your name and a phone number where you can be reached.

2. Email Secretary, Nikki Dalbey (nlhill1@ilstu.edu) to let her know that your recording has been completed.

NOTE: What we are seeking to evaluate is your SPONTANEOUS SPEECH in the target language. We do not expect perfection, just a reasonable degree of spontaneous fluency, with the natural pauses and hesitations of normal conversational speech, What we will NOT be able to evaluate is a speech sample that sounds like reading from a prepared script.

The graduate faculty reserves the right to conduct a follow-up phone interview with the candidate at its direction.

You must be eligible for employment in the United States and at Illinois State University and/or for the number of hours required for the position.

Illinois State University student employees are restricted to no more than 28 hours per week of on-campus employment for all positions held. International students are restricted by their visa status to no more than 20 hours per week of on-campus employment when the university is in session but may work up to 28 hours per week when the university is not in session. Please contact the Office of International Student and Scholar Services for guidance on visa restrictions on work hours. The University cannot grant exceptions to visa status rules/laws.
