Our Opportunity

We are currently seeking an Advanced Mechanical Technician for our Test & Engineering Center in Phoenix, AZ. Exponent's Vehicle Engineering Practice provides a wide range of vehicle evaluation and testing services. We have worked with automobiles, buses, trucks, vans, bicycles, trailers, motorcycles, trains, forklifts, tractors, cranes, mining and construction equipment, ATVs, golf carts, and more. We assist clients in addressing multi-faceted issues related to accident causation, failure analysis, vehicle design, and electrical subsystems and provide complex component and full-scale product testing. A considerable asset of the Vehicle Engineering Practice is the Test and Engineering Center (TEC) in Phoenix, Arizona, a highly capable test facility that conducts a wide range of tests that support these evaluations. Some of the tests conducted at the Phoenix facility include full-scale vehicle testing, mechanical and electronic component testing, and battery testing.

You will be responsible for

  • Preparing vehicles and products for testing
  • Assisting with the test execution
  • Receiving vehicles and other products including visual inspection and documentation
  • Photographing test vehicles and products received
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment and tools
  • Repairing and maintaining company vehicles
  • Conducting tests using mechanical and hydraulic systems
  • Participating in facility upkeep and repairs
  • Performing various maintenance related tasks in a lab environment
  • Providing guidance and input to technicians and engineers for project timelines and deliverables
  • Working individually and within a team environment to determine test methodologies and document test execution
You will have the following skills and qualifications

  • Applied mechanical skills with 5-10 years of experience
  • Strong knowledge of automotive diagnostics, automotive systems, and hydraulics; strong troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent work ethic and enthusiasm for doing high-quality work
  • Ability to work overtime and support occasional travel
  • Ability to adapt proficiently and professionally to changing task definitions
  • Ability to lead a team of technicians with varying levels of experience and skillsets
  • Good people skills and the ability to work with different personalities
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with a wide variety of professionals, including engineers, scientists, managers, and administrative staff
  • The following are preferred:
    • ASE master technician certifications or a degree in automotive technology
    • Machining, fabrication, and welding skills
    • Working knowledge of test processes and test standards
    • A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
    • Wood-working skills
