Job Overview

The R&D Magnetic Design Engineer you will Design and Develop Magnetics in support of Power Supplies for the telecommunications, high-computing, datacenter, and industrial industries. The magnetic designer will be responsible for electrical and mechanical testing of magnetics as well as all magnetic documentation. The Magnetic Designer will be responsible for magnetic design from concept realization through introduction of product into high volume production. Additional responsibility to include Component Standardization and evaluation of new magnetic materials in the product development process in support of power supply development. These projects will include New Product Introduction, Direct Material Productivity, resolving customer issues, and sustaining engineering of existing products. This position will be expected to work with a global team in Shanghai involving magnetic subjects through all phases of the magnetic lifecycle.

Responsibilities:

This is a challenging position that calls for strong academic, design and problem solving, and leadership skills.

As the R&D Magnetic Design Engineer I, you will:

  • Responsible for Qualification and approval of Magnetic components including characterization and physical analysis.
  • Characterize, Test, and Document Alternative sources for existing and end of life magnetic components. Assist in suggesting alternates.
  • Provide support with failure mode analysis, addressing quality complaints, working closely with component manufacturers to ensure corrective actions are implemented.
  • Assist and Support review of magnetic supplier capability, internally and with supplier.
  • Assist and support evaluating new Magnetic technologies, New Material & Process Technologies, and magnetic suppliers.
  • Support and assist magnetic failure through multiple non-destructive and destructive tools as part of the magnetic team.
  • Responsible for reviewing and approving new part requests and maintaining integrity of the data in the internal PLM.
  • Establish, Maintain & Understand Magnetic Component Part Attributes to support commodity reviews and design roadmaps.
  • Drive Magnetic Component Standardization, Multiple Sources through a Qualified Supply Chain
  • Responsible for creating documentation pertaining to Magnetic Design, qualification, Failure Response, supplier technology survey etc.
  • Participate as a member of Global Magnetic Component Commodity
  • Execute the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements.
  • Document technical data generated by the assigned project consistent with engineering policies and procedures
  • Provide timely communications on significant issues or developments
  • Participate on teams assigned to address organizational initiatives and generic issues
  • Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews
  • Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering / Power Electronics or Bachelor of Technology from an accredited university or college
  • Minimum of 1 year or equivalent experience in the design, production or testing of high frequency switching magnetic components.
  • PC proficiency - Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.
  • Knowledge of High Frequency AC-to-DC or DC-to-DC Power magnetics

Desired Characteristics:

  • Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering / Power Electronics
  • Basic knowledge of material properties of magnetic cores, conductors, plastics, Insulation, and epoxy.
  • Knowledge of Global Safety Magnetic Organizations
  • Basic Knowledge of Circuit Simulation (PSpice / Simplis SiMetrix),
  • Understanding of 1D or 2D design capabilities (Finite Element Analysis)
  • Familiarization with Software Tools: Ansys, SI Wave, Minitab, FRACAS, PLM (Part Lifecycle Management tool: WindChill)
  • Ability to apply Six Sigma tools
  • An understanding of the principles of test case design, bug reporting and tracking, requirements analysis, and test automation
  • Effective multi-tasking skills with ability to prioritize multiple assignments and provide Global Technology Support
  • Ability to act as a change agent across cross functional organization (Design, Manufacturing, Sourcing, Supplier and Customer)
  • Self-motivated, detail oriented, strong team player
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively
  • Ability to prioritize and communicate in a dynamic environment
