Would you like to make a difference in rebuilding power grid systems? HDR Engineering is looking for an initiative-taking individual to lead our KY/TN/AR Transmission Team as part of our growing southeast Power Delivery teams. The preferred location for this position is Chattanooga, TN, with consideration of HDR's Lexington, Louisville, and Nashville offices. This individual will be expected to be a motivated leader who can facilitate the growth of the team and mentor staff within our Power Market Sector.

The chosen individual will be responsible for development, growing and managing a transmission team. The primary duty of the Transmission Team Lead includes responsibility for knowledge and execution of the technical aspects; and deliverables of projects assigned. HDR is looking for an experienced engineer who understands and can complete technical requirements of projects from basic to moderate complexity.

Staff management responsibilities will include managing workflow and utilization, mentoring and staff development, forecasting and scheduling, quality control, and fostering a team environment. In addition to staff management responsibilities, the Transmission Team Lead will also function as a technical lead on site development projects, coordinate with other disciplines across HDR, and lead the development of construction drawings, specifications, and supporting engineering calculations.

This exciting opportunity also allows for growth and experience in business development. The individual will be directly involved with external clients as well as internal project managers, market sector leads, business group managers, and other leaders throughout HDR. The Team Lead will take part in, and often lead, proposal efforts, scope development and fee estimations for our clients. The position also offers the ability for onsite and in field experience with our clients and our teams. There will be occasional regional and national travel.

Specific duties include:

  • Responsible for monitoring, growing and participating in the execution of HDR's portfolio of Transmission Power Delivery services throughout the Kentucky, Tennessee markets.
  • Assist regional and national leadership in growing the power delivery program by developing new clients, enhancing our position with existing clients and implementing our long-term strategy in the market.
  • Responsible for Project Management and oversight of transmission projects of all sizes and complexity, including scope and/or proposal development, project team development and assignment, project execution, project closeout, and quality control, schedule, and budget management.
  • Should understand basic project management tools and techniques including client goals and objectives, contract types and project risk, work breakdown structures, project scope, schedule, and budget, financial management and controls, including earned value, and project closeout.
  • Participate in development of strong client relationships and serve as a key client manager for selected clients.
  • Provide technical leadership to ensure projects have appropriate staff and that the quality program is implemented effectively.
  • Provide quality control reviews for individual projects.
  • Participate in power delivery marketing efforts, communications and client development with business, operations, marketing and project staff to maximize client satisfaction, company growth and profitability.
  • Work with marketing staff on Resources Business Group pursuits and coordinate marketing activities with other Business Group leads.
  • Work with local and regional operations and national leadership to build capabilities through recruitment and staff training.
  • Encourage and participate in business and community activities as representative of HDR.
  • May assist with development of technical papers and or presentations that showcase HDR's capabilities and industry experience.
  • Responsible for quality control reviews in accordance with HDR's policy.
  • Specific experience performing aspects associated with Transmission design including:
    • Structural analysis of Transmission towers / poles.
    • Permit support
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • BS Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • 5 years of Transmission design experience
  • PE
  • Transmission line design experience using PLS-CADD, steel and wood transmission structure analysis/design, foundation design, material procurement, specifications, and construction support.
  • Client management, marketing, business development skills, contacts, and relationships with power delivery clients preferred.
  • Previous experience managing staff, clients, contracts and hiring staff for an engineering consulting firm preferred.
  • Ability to travel is required.
  • Proven track record of working cooperatively with diverse teams, regional, department, technical managers, and project staff.
  • Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values

  • Strong computer skills, Knowledge in/of PLSCAD, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10+ years preferred
  • Experience and client relationships in Southeast preferred.
  • Experience with Alternative Delivery Methods (EPC and DBB) preferred.
  • Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm desired.
