Senior Director, Clinical Computational Biology

In Bayer Research & Early Development Oncology, we discover the next generation of cancer therapies with scientific innovation hubs in Berlin, Boston, Basel, and Oslo. Translational Sciences Oncology is a multidisciplinary department that harnesses cutting-edge technologies to enable earlier detection, precise molecular diagnosis, and personalized treatment for cancer patients. We ensure seamless translational support starting from the assessment of new targets through to preclinical and clinical studies from first-in-human through lifecycle management.

This Senior Director role is accountable for a global computational biology team's deliverables to clinical development programs. In particular, this role will guide the team's efforts to compile and analyze internal and external high-dimensional datasets to deliver insights on translational science strategy and exploratory endpoints in clinical trial protocols. This role will initiate, delegate, and manage innovative meta-analyses and reverse translation initiatives that leveraging internal and external collaborations. Through an extensive network of colleagues throughout Bayer, this role will successfully implement cross-functional solutions. This role will advance scientific leadership within the company, our network of external partners, and the broader cancer research community.

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary responsibilities of this role, Senior Director, Computational Biology (Translational Sciences Oncology) are to:

  • Allocate global team resources, manage stakeholder relationships, and ensure prosecution of complex analyses on high-dimensional data from clinical trial samples;
  • Guide team members to ensure optimal coordination and alignment of roles and responsibilities among Translational Science Leaders, Biomarker Statisticians, and additional stakeholders in the Oncology Strategic Business Unit;
  • Coordinate and scientifically reviews the team's data-driven deliverables that evaluate stage-gate decision criteria for portfolio programs;
  • Establish the framework for decision making, scientific best practices, and effective communication within the team;
  • Initiate and lead cross-functional translational science strategic initiatives. Advocate for championing innovative ideas and approaches, both internally and externally;
  • Contribute to the prosecution of the R&D roadmap for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) by proposing high-value business problems, contextualizing Digital Product development as a Business Owner, and identifying the added value from these approaches;
  • Coordinate interfaces across Research & Early Development Oncology, Oncology Biostatistics & Data Management, Data Science & AI, and IT functions.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Biological or Computational Sciences (Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Chemistry, Computational Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Statistics, or other related discipline) with very strong computational or quantitative focus;
  • Demonstrated peer-reviewed publications in computational biology;
  • Ability to set, communicate, and implement a strategic vision;
  • Prior experience with managing direct reports;
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills and learning agility, highly self-motivated, with an aspiration of continuous improvement of oneself and others;
  • Effective influencer, communicator, and team player with proven networking skills, both internally and externally.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 8+ years industry experience leading direct reports in computational biology who are responsible for retrospective exploratory analyses of DNA-seq or RNA-seq data from oncology clinical trials.
